Is that you, Stephanie? Miss you! not that we mind chatting with Karl.

Yes that post was me.... It has been me and Carl off and on today..... Thanks for missing me, it has been a very long summer!

Glad you're back on again....Bumper crops of pears can be sliced thin and dehydrated....make a great snack for winter and can be rehydrated for fried pies etc. Our asian pears are getting ripe now and the Courtlands will be ready in the fall.

I dont know what makes me madder when it comes to things like this. The fact that the law enforcement can perform like we live in a police state and come on your property illegal like they did and do what they did. Or the fact that the American public hears about this stuff and just goes about their normal business like they dont care. Forget about the rabbits that they caused to suffer, Take a long hard look at our rights that are getting trampled on. I will bite my toungue and shut up now.

Last night at Blanchard I bought 3 real nice small asil stags. I talked to one man that told me a little about the guy that sold them and about his birds, but never did get to talk to the guy that sold them. (and as usual I forgot his name) If anyone on here (or if he is on here) could someone steer me in the direction, would love to talk to him about his fowl. Thanks Guy

Hey Cowboy do you have any pics of your madgscars? I would like to see what they look like.

We may have to do a role call or do some land line calls and check on folks again. Been a while since I have seen NN Breeder on here,Teach needs to come back again,Hows Stimpy doing, saw where he was at the sat. sale,OkCarla must be busy at work,City too. Even old Monty! If you guys are reading please check in and say hello! We miss you and many others I didn't mention because of my short memory of names!lol

We had a nice cool day here and tomorrow is supposed to be in the 80s! I have a pile of wood scrap stacked up to burn.

Got my baby woodpeckers back today. The evening before my surgery, when I was feeding everyone late--about 8:30 p.m. on a Sunday, I came upon two baby red bellied woodpeckers who'd plastered themselves to the front door of my chicken pen that was right under their nesting hole. One was just at ground level, the other about 3' up. Didn't see nor hear parents and knew these two would be someone's meal, so brought them in the house. Then had to scramble to find someone to take them. My vet told me to all the police, who could give me the ranger's number, who could probably connect me with a local rehabber---which happened. They are nearly ready to release, but apparently she needed some help finishing with them. She thought they needed a lot of insects, which are hard to come by, and had been buying and feeding them crickets. According to my bird books, the red bellied, unlike most other woodpeckers, are mostly vegetarians. They are now in a large cage in one of the empty chicken pens, and I'm hand feeding them every few hours. They are also eating a cake of suet, that had a picture of a woodpecker on the front. I'm hoping for complete success.

Good thing I didn't buy any birds at Blanchard last night because I've got more anyway!
Went to gather eggs tonight and under my Mille Fleur Cochin, Milly, were 4 chicks! Milly's rascally sister, Ginger, keeps laying eggs in her nest and trying too brood on all of them with her. I marked Milly's eggs with an "X" and check every day to see if Ginger has added any. I didn't keep track of how long Milly has been setting though and wasn't even sure if the heat hadn't ruined them or weither the roo in with them is fertile so the chicks were a suprize!
I should have guessed though because today my dog kept going over to the outside of the pen nearest to the nest box and cocking his head like he was listening.
The roo is 7 mo. old, hatched Jan. 11th at Carl and Stephanie's, so his name is "Carl". He is actually one of my first chicks from my own birds and their first eggs!. So far, his color is superb and his type is improving but his legs are a little too long. I have alot of young roos behind him to chose from.
The one pullet I still have from those first eggs is named "Ramona" not Stephanie.

Chicken raising is so fun!

Oh, I just love them. As far as Cochins I've only got the 8 standard chicks I hatched & then the new red Cochin Bantam. So I'm just getting started & can't wait! This little red girl feels like a handful of flour she's so soft.

I'm not a breeder and just started in chickens, but my hatchery Silkies are 6 wks old and it's pretty obvious which are males by their combs. Some of the ones with zero comb may develop them later on but I can sure tell obvious males now.
