***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Was the paint taken off an old lead based paint often used for painting rock and concrete....If so, you may want the crew to sweep it up and remove it. The lead residue in the paint is not good for garden beds or anything else.

Sounds like you got to him just in time! I know there are some folks who are opposed to wing clipping, but I do it too, on the young birds especially. I don't do it on the older birds since they've calmed down quite a bit and know where the best treats are.

I only clip the flight feathers on one wing. That makes it harder for them to take flight because it makes them off balance in the air.

Thank you, I was wondering if you do both sides or just one

I will do just one and see how it goes! Thank you

Just got back from OKC. We took Dude the rescue chocolate lab pup to the airport, he should be getting to his new family in a couple of hours now. It was a bittersweet day. I know he is going to a great home full of love and they have children for him to grow w/ and have been wanting a dog for a long time so that is great, but we had grown so attatched in this past 1 1/2 months. We knew from the begining we were going to rehome him if at all possible b/c we already have 3 rescued dogs of our own. While we are both sad about it, Sasha (the red dog) may need some prozac!

Only clip one wing, only the flight feathers, and trim back about 1 -1 1/2 inches from the wing itself. This will keep the bird from gaining any lift on one side and it will flip itself over rather than flying.

if you clip both wings they can still fly.

Now that would be too easy lol We can get the pick-up backed all the way up to the chicken run but it's 8' x 30' and I'm thinking I might need 2 pickup beds full? I'm not sure. My husband is a heavy equipment mechanic....surely he knows someone with a dump trailer. Good call

I already asked them that, this place (Campbell's Asphalt in Edmond) only uses cleaned and sifted sand. He said it's clean enough to put in your kids sandbox. Yea, I'd hate to expose my baby chickens to some sort of road chemical :-O

Hi everyone! Isn't it wonderful having this cooler weather!?!?! I was wondering if anyone know's if the Kellyville poultry swap is still going. I need to sell two roo's and got no response on craigslist. I wish I could keep em but I'm in the city limits so they've got to go. They are silkies if anyone know's anyone who'd like one. One is white and the other is splash. http://tulsa.craigslist.org/grd/2557191977.html That's the add that has some pics in it.

I've worked so dang hard all through this heat building the chicken pen that shoveling sand in 90 degrees sounds like a day off :-/ It'd be good exercise. And I can do it a few hours a day and have it done in a week. I think I'll just have them dump it in the back of my truck. I'm glad to hear you like the sand. It doesn't take these baby chicks long at all to tear up the dirt in their pen, I can see already that dirt isn't going to be a good option.
