***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Evening everyone! Haven't been on in a few days and wow,
th.gif
takes an hour to catch up on what all we missed!

Carl, Thank you for visiting with me about the wind energy, etc. Oh, and we are taking some steps to try and get some backing to allow chickens as pets for therapy!

Mitzi, OMG what a terrific job you did on the runs and your barn! And... yes, thank you for the pic of Valicia (formerly "Boston Blackie"
big_smile.png
), she looks very happy. It was good of you to "share" the two cochins with Firefly.

We are still smarting a little about losing all our birds, but they all did go to wonderful new homes.

We got notice that our son was hit in Iraq, but he and his team are all "ok" as he puts it. Their Humvee was hit by an RKG3 anti-tank explosive formed penetrating device last week and even though there was a lot of damage to the truck, the driver only got some shrapnel in the side of his neck and the gunner got a couple of pieces in his leg and son just got sent off with a concushon. We are so grateful that these young men were spared and we do pray for all the families who have lost loved ones in these policing actions around the globe. We are so proud of our military as those who willingly sacrifice themselves for the protection of our American way of life and the highest ideals of mankind.

Glad everyone had a good time at the auctions and the Swap.

Must go back now and read 10 more pages to catch up on the thread!

Have a good evening everyone.

OK, I just checked and Perry is part of the OMPA, there is no interconnect allowed by OMPA without violating terms of thier power purchase contract with the city. I fought this battle once already.
Did you apply for the IRS 30% credits for th ethings you have done? If not you may still have time to amend the taxes for those years. I am sure we will see each other again, if you will remind me I have a 300+ page book I could loan you that steps through a great deal of residential energy conservation. I also have test equipment that can test for air infiltration, to help find your air leaks so they can be fixed.

ONG just came out with thier rebate program and is pretty good, up to $1950 for heater upgrades or conversion from electric to gas, 250-850 for hot water heaters.

Other than that insulation, and air infiltration and the biggest bang for the buck.

Can you explain what you mean by no interconnect? Tell me more... please. I can't believe in this day and age they wouldn't let you suppliment your energy use with some solar panels or windmills. That's just wrong. If that's the case, that would be just one more reason to move back to the country!
I haven't done the insulation, mostly because I'd like to redo the duct work in the attic before blowing more in. One more question, I went with very dark shingles when I re-roofed the house. Would that make a huge difference in energy use?

We got a bag of mealworms at Atwoods in Shawnee about a month ago. That kind of stuff doesn't seem to be well stocked there.
Then we found a larger tub of them at Lowe's for a cheaper price.
The Petsmart in MWC sometimes has live ones for sale but said this year's heat really hurt their suppliers.

I never thought of checking at those places. I'd seen the post about Atwoods having them and I've been waiting patiently to get there and score some. Thanks for the info... ANY excuse to get to Lowes is a good one.

These are three of the birds I got from upcdayz they are doing great and are my constant companions while I walk aroung the yard, I was on the phone this afternoon and stepped out on the front porch the two hens spotted me and came running all the way down the drive the way they run is so funny they came all the way up on the porch just to say Hi LOL

The Pekins I got from Coral that Monty transported for me that area behind them should be part of the pond and hopefully will be again soon if we can just get enough rain..

If you want to try and get into growing them yourself they are very easy.

My son did a tour in Iraq and I know the stress you go through just knowing where they are. I can't even imagin what it would be like to hear there was such a close call. Your family will be in my prayers. Please tell your son and daughter they're truly appreciated!! I think it would be awesome if all of us Okies could put together a care pkg and send it to him. Maybe we could send you $ and you could put together a pkg to send him on behalf of the BYC Okies?

janbcoo1 - What a blessing to hear that your son is okay. I can only imagine the stress of having him away from home and in harm's way. Prayers for your family and for his safe return when his tour is over.

Ellwood - Your animals look sooooo happy! I love the photo of the Pekins. It looks like they are talking about what to wear to dinner, or maybe they're discussing the water level in the pond.

I put our goats up early tonight because it looks like we're about to get hit with some heavy rain. They seemed unhappy to be locked in early, so I put a few cuttings from one of our persimmon trees into their feeder. They complained with their mouths full, but I could tell they were just trying to maintain their headstrong reputations.

Bill, those are black sex link hens - at least that's what they're supposed to be according to Ideal Hatchery. They are pretty, and seem quite happy to be at your place along with the roo and ducks.
