I think it's the dynamics of different groups of chickens. It's so interesting to me but frustrating. The 2 Partridge LF Cochins I got from you (that were getting beat up at your place) were perfect little ladies for the 1st 3 days here. Right up until they realized the big blue Cochin hens were pushovers. The 1 Partridge (with gold eyes and longer comb-Coco?) has turned into a bully here and won't let anyone eat, not even her own sister Cochin. Has anyone else noticed this sort of stuff? The Dark Cornish I got from Jan is a favorite of everyone here humans and birds alike-awesome bird with tons of personality. Each new bird into her area she runs up to....puffs her chest out and stares them down. No pecking or chasing. If they run from her, all is good and they're buddies. If they puff back up at her then she walks off and still all is good and they're buddies. It's like they have some secret communication and each just has to decide who's boss. They don't CARE who's boss, they just want to know. I know dog dynamics like the back of my hand, this whole chicken thing is fascinating to me.
Can anyone tell me whether the standard sized Cornish has the same laid back gentle personalty as the bantam Cornish I've got? If that's the case I'd loooove to find a young standard Cornish hen. Robin, I think your 2 NN's were just glad to be home with "mama" again. Remember how that one closed his eyes and practically melted as soon as you were holding him again after being at my place for a week? That's chicken-love no matter how you look at it

well, a couple options on cocoa- section her off for a week and then they will have to redo the pecking order, or put 2 feeding and watering stations- and you could always resort to the spray bottle to teach her she can't bully them around- it could be they are still sorting out top hen etc- even among cochins i guess their is a order to who's who.... dynamics are fascinating to watch as they have their little soap opera's going...

NanaKat, fireworks NEED to go off there. I've found you don't have to scream and holler and stamp your foot, you've just got to keep repeating your expectations. Over. And over. And over. Until you get exactly what you deserve. Definitely find a different doctor. Your MIL has her kids only now to make sure she's treated properly. She's at a disadvantage because of her health and her age. But her kids aren't. She's lucky she has you all to fight for her.

i agree with mitzi on this one, our society looks down on the elderly, and we need to defend them- i remember when my dad was in the hospital, they would talk about him as if he wasn't there- he gave me one of his 'looks' and i grabbed the medical personel and chewed them out for disrespect- mind you, this man had 2 phd's one in geology and in physics- he was not ignorant- still makes me mad and very aware of how the elderly are treated

Guineas are sounding the alarm like crazy this morning and I looked out and the neighbor has a huge pile of molded hay he is burning!

I love my guineas and the fact that they alert me about danger!

Don't be fooled by my brave talk. I have a minor breakdown several times a year after I process birds. I want to be able to provide city dwellers with healthy meat birds. Asian and Hispanic families, in particular, ask me for birds that are young and meaty. They miss the open-air markets of their home countries, and they do not feel comfortable buying birds processed in large factories. Visit a poultry processing plant and you'll probably join them in that opinion. Mechanical evisceration is neither kind nor accurate and often leads to contamination directly on the carcass or in the cooling tanks. I think Joel Salatin's books make a good argument for raising one's own meat birds.

Woah... we have a state wide burn ban in effect last I heard. Neighbor or not, they need to put that out, or you need to call the fire department. It's too dry for that, and you could lose your own property in about the time it takes for a spark to travel the wrong direction.

A. 1. It is unlawful for any person to set fire to any forest, grass, range, crop, or other wildlands, or to build a campfire or bonfire, or to burn trash or other material that may cause a forest, grass, range, crop or other wildlands fire in any county, counties or area within a county where, because of emergency drought conditions, there is gubernatorially proclaimed extraordinary danger from fire, unless the setting of any backfire during the drought emergency is necessary to afford protection as determined by a representative of the Division of Forestry, or unless it can be established that the setting of the backfire was necessary for the purpose of saving life or property. The burden of proving the necessity shall rest on the person claiming a defense.

2. The Division of Forestry shall advise the Governor when the lands described in paragraph 1 of this subsection in any county, counties or area within a county of this state because of emergency drought conditions are in extraordinary danger from fire. The Governor may by proclamation declare a drought emergency to exist and describe the general boundaries of the area affected.

3. Any proclamation promulgated by the Governor under authority of this subsection shall be effective immediately upon the Governor’s signed approval of the emergency proclamation and shall supersede any resolution passed by a board of county commissioners pursuant to subsection B of this section. Notice of the proclamation shall occur through posting on the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food, and Forestry’s website and informing local news media. Evidence of publication or posting as herein provided shall be maintained by the Forestry Division.

4. When conditions warrant, due notice of the termination of the emergency shall be promptly made by proclamation, which shall be published or posted in like manner as when officially declared.

5. Any person who violates this subsection is guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of not more than One Thousand Dollars ($1,000.00), by imprisonment for not more than one (1) year, or both.

B. 1. It is unlawful for any person to set fire to any forest, grass, range, crop or other wildlands, or to build a campfire or bonfire, or to burn trash or other material that may cause a forest, grass, range, crop or other wildlands fire in any county of this state in which the board of county commissioners of the county has passed a resolution declaring a period of extreme fire danger. As used in this subsection, "extreme fire danger" means:

a. moderate, severe or extreme drought conditions exist as determined by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) pursuant to its criteria, and

b. no more than one-half (1/2) inch of precipitation is forecast for the next three (3) days, and

c. fire occurrence is significantly greater than normal for the season and/or initial attack on a significant number of wildland fires has been unsuccessful due to extreme fire behavior, and

d. more than twenty percent (20%) of the wildfires in the county have been caused by escaped debris or controlled burning.

2. A majority of the board of county commissioners may call an emergency meeting at any time to pass or revoke a resolution declaring a period of extreme fire danger in accordance with this section.

3. A board of county commissioners shall have the documented concurrence of a majority of the chiefs, or their designees, of the municipal and certified rural fire departments located in the county that a period of extreme fire danger exists prior to passage of a resolution declaring a period of extreme fire danger in the county. The resolution shall be effective for a period not to exceed thirty (30) days from the date of passage by the board of county commissioners, unless the burn ban is removed earlier by the same method by which it was approved. If extreme fire danger conditions persist, subsequent resolutions may be passed by the board of county commissioners in the same manner as provided in this paragraph. The board of county commissioners, in the resolution, may grant exceptions to the fire prohibition based on appropriate precautionary measures.

4. Any resolution passed by a board of county commissioners under authority of this subsection shall be effective immediately upon passage of the resolution. Notice of the resolution shall be submitted to the Forestry Division of the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food, and Forestry, all local news media, local law enforcement officials, and the state headquarters of the Department of Public Safety, the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department and the Department of Wildlife Conservation on the day of passage of the resolution. Evidence of publication or posting as provided in this paragraph shall be maintained by the county.

5. The provisions of this subsection may be enforced by any law enforcement officer of this state.

6. Any person convicted of violating the provisions of this subsection shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and shall be subject to a fine of not more than Five Hundred Dollars ($500.00), to imprisonment for not more than one (1) year, or to both such fine and imprisonment.

7. The selling of fireworks shall not be considered an act in violation of this subsection.

Morning Okie Folks!

Nana sorry to hear about your MIL's problems. We worry that the wifes mom won't get proper care where she is now. It made sense to leavev her in the home where my wife ios DON as she could see her daily and get her the proper care if and when she needed it. But the other sister who has no medical knowledge thought she could do better. Yeah right! Thats why she was in the shape she was in when we got her. She hadn't been top the Dr. in 8 months! and her sugar was way out of control. I'm sure she will be back in bad shape in no time.

Michael ,boy I would like to see geese come donw to $5 here! They sell for $15-20 here all the time.Your right about some people not feeding their birds as they get older and eat more. The hamburgs I got at the sale sat. were all legs and skinny bodys!

P&B it was nice to see you post again. Been worrying if you were sick.
