Oh my - I saw that first photo of you and your mom 'about six miles west of the Bristow exit' and thought "nice photo - wonder why they decided to pull off the road there?" Hmmm....it was funny of you to take the photos for your Christmas Vacation Report. Sorry that happened - glad it was warmish and that you have AAA!

Doodle - love those guinea pig babies!

I hope everyone had a fantastic Christmas. I opened gifts with DBF Jack (ammo for me, art for him, a stuffed squirrel toy for Titus). Then we went over to Jack's sister's house for a quick, short "eat & run" Christmas dinner before Jacktook me to work at the Tulsa Oilers hockey game. We beat Wichita 5 to 2.

Hey everyone. It's been a hectic day at work today. I just thought that I'd drop in and say hello while I was eating. Hope everyone's day is going well.

I lost my first four chickens to predators and it didn't bother me much at all. Losing snake stung a bit because that chick LOVED people and she was very friendly. I have to say it is not like losing a cat or dog. I am surprised I don't get more upset. I grew up a city girl and have lived in at least medium sized towns like Lawton or on an army base since then. I mean it was sad, but whenever I have lost a dog or cat I cried off and on for days, sometimes weeks. Ofcourse I have always had the dogs or cats for awhile.

we were shooting until we all had to go in for the family Christmas dinner. I'm a bit new to the gun game and those .45s are too much for me yet, we've got a pretty little .22 handgun and an old shotgun I like much better

My husband is the one who gung-ho on guns, I don't really know much about them. I just wanted something to protect my chickens that wouldn't knock me on my butt

Poco, love the pictures. We hardly ever get to see pictures of humans on here. Looks like you had quite the eventful holiday. That was some kind of flat tire.
RetiredArmyWife, I'm sorry you lost the little chick. I just can't do the baby chick thing anymore because I can't stand losing them. Everyone says you "get used to it" but it's all the babies chicks you lose on the way to "getting used to it" that scares me.

Had to put two of my layers down today. It never gets easy to lose one that you have gotten attached to. To lose one unexpectedly hurts my heart but makes me look more closely at the flock to see if there are things to remedy to maintain the health of the whole.

Both of these two girls have been effective layers, but in the past two weeks have been on the decline...both limping and have been pecked by the rest of the flock. When they were out freeranging, they were the ones Gracie was drawn to for sniffing and guarding...a good indication they were ill. To prevent spread of anything harmful both had been separated from the flock, wormed and quarantined with a watchful eye and additives to their food along with saurkraut for good bacteria in the gut. Physical condition continued to go poorer this past week. Hubby used the drill to dig a 4 foot deep hole for burying them out near the woods.

Sometimes there is not a good explanation for a death...it just happens...doesn't make it any easier. My grandson said "God just needed that chick in Heaven." Sounds good to me.

Well the girls did fine while we were in Stillwater for overnight, except one of them decided to hop the fence and we couldn't find her in the dark last night. I guess we either don't have too many predators in our neighborhood any more or our girls are good at hiding in the honeysuckle and brush pile!! Kind of glad the house next door is empty cause that's where our girls seem to go when they get out. Had a little rain up north here today but at least the temps are decent. And no Snow Storm of the century this year!!! Hooray!!! Another day with my mother and I would've been nuts.

Busy day here today,I got the last two coops moved and burned a lot of scrap wood I had collected up.Got the chickens all rearranged and taken care of. Its supposed to rain starting anytime and keep up tomorrow so I tried to take advantage of a dry day today!
Got seven eggs today. Have a serama thinking about going broody and heard an ee hen clucking too. I also got the thermostat ordered for the stryrafoam bator. Never have much luck with it but nothing tried nothing gained.
Got some dwarf rabbits located on craigslist, supposed to go after them in the morning. Tradeing material and may keep a couple too.

Nanakat, sorry about your hens

.

Gary got the okra forest cut down today and put in the chipper pile, but several are way to big for the chipper.

I made some more custard, that stuff is dangerous!!!!! But all it is is milk and eggs w/ just a tiny amount of sugar (1/2 cup spread over 6 servings) I'm thinking it is a very healthy breakfast w/o any starches, full of protien.

Chopped a bucket full of veggies for the chickens treats for the week.
