***OKIES in the BYC III ***

welcome-byc.gif

Hi! I am new to the backyard chickens, but have had backyard chickens for a few years now. I live in Newcastle OK and love the americanas as well as the marans. My son, who is 8, has been wanting a Turken for a long time now. Is there anyone out there that might be able to sell me one or two? I dont have the ability to hatch, and would rather get a young chicken than a chick as we have a cat living indoors recovering from what we think was a coyote attack.

Also, I have tried PM'ing myself to see if it works, but I never get any messages - so dont think I am sending them out. Any ideas?

Thanks! :)

Yes chickens love styrofoam stuff. I mad this neat little pen for a pair of bantam asils out of a real nice dog house and attached a dog kennel to it.
One day I was out doing choirs and I kept hearing a pounding sound. This went on for a few days, then I discovered that the noise was coming from inside the doghouse/chickenhouse. The hen had almost picked all the styrofoam insulation off the walls.

That is a fine little set-up, I think I over think a lot of my pens LOL some are a lot larger than they need to be by the time I get them finished LOL The one thing I always try to do is make sure that I shouldn't have to bend over while collecting eggs or cleaning out the coop and that makes me think bigger than I usually have to but I have knee and back issues so I try to make everything taller like my rabbit cages are all 4 foot off the ground to the bottom so I can reach it easier and predators have more trouble reaching the feet of bunnies

I feel your pain. I am in the process of going a new direction with some of my pens. My smaller birds like the asil bantams, KO shamo and pigeons are going to be put in high rise pens. They will be on legs about 3 1/2 feet tall. Mostly wire floors. I do like my birds on the ground, but if I keep a pan of fresh dirt and give them some greens regular I think they will be happy. The main focus is on waste. Face it Pigeons and chickens can be the most waste full birds out there. Constantly scratching their feed out of the pan, being waste full. By having several of these high rise pens, the layers running around will have access to the underside of the pens having a blast with the spill off. I have too many chickens to put all of them up in the air, so I will still have many of the little houses and hoop pens etc. I go to garage sales, flea markets etc and find anything that would make a comfortable pen for the birds. That's the advantage of being poor all ones life. I recycled stuff way before it became fashionable.

Darn if I would have waited 20 minutes I could have used this for the tip of the day tomorrow.

That's identical to what I use for quarrantine! I thought I was so inventive for thinking it up and here you'd already thought of it long before I did

And that would've been awesome for a Tip Of The Day, you're right. I have a feeling you've forgotten more about chickens than I'll know the rest of my life.

Nana what kind of chick are you holding in your profile pic. Sooner love the bee outfit in yours.

Guy, It's a two day old Columbian Wyandotte.

Welcome to all the new folks

Missed out on some nice conversation tonight while working on the tax records. Got the cattle account done and now working on the farm. Then will work on the personal stuff. I'll be balancing a 13 colum ledger in my dreams....

They are buzzing like bees?
I wish I could have an Apiary but I am allergic to bee stings.

I will share pictures with you on here! You can see them that way. I'm sure I won't be able to shut up about them.

No the avatar should be clearer.....it is before I load it here.
