***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Seen wer they wer trying to stop craigslist ...

This morning, my Google home page has a dark box across the "Google icon" and it says to tell Congress not to censor the internet. There is a post here on BYC asking us to contact our legislative leaders and ask them to not support SOPA and PIPA, and says that Wikipedia has shut down their English version in protest of some pending legislation. I haven't had a chance to see what those acronyms stand for, but it would seem that there is legislation pending that would make forum owners responsible for any content that violates copyright laws, which is posted to their forum - which would be a nightmare for any forum owner - due to the volume of information posted by forum users.

Edited to add:
SOPA stands for Stop Online Piracy Act and PIPA stands for "Protect IP Act"
Here is a link to a CBS article on the issue

To make sure I always have thawed water @ the barn I took a rain barrel & dropped fish tank heater in it. Already had the 55 gal drum that I used as a rain barrel & already had the heater, I am guessing new the heater cost the same as a stock tank heater, but people are always getting rid of fish stuff at yard sales. I will make sure I look for old tank heaters.

How much water will the average fish tank heater keep thawed?

I don't have experience with fish tanks larger than 20 gallons, but would think that the heater would have to be able to do more than the average heater for a tank located in a house that is already kept above freezing temperatures. .

Do you have enough of a bee operation to get honey? That would be awesome. PLus it helps out our natural world so much. Is it hard/expensive to get into?

My primary goal with my bees is pollination. I haven't had much honey from my bees in the 6 years I have been keeping them - but have had awesome crops of peaches and apples when the blossoms didn't freeze in the Spring.

I got my hive body & supers put together, I'm going to wait on warmer weather to paint them. I started working on the frames & will continue on those tonight. As far as making your own the only thing is to make sure they are the same size as commercial ones so you can use the same frames. I think it would be very dificult to make those & they are pretty cheap to buy.

I don't look to have honey for myself the first year. I will let my hive build up & let them keep the stores to make it through the next winter. If there is a good nectur flow I could possibly get some but I won't worry about that.

I posted the date for the pryor show yesterday but we think the date may be off by one day. I am still looking for my flyer.

Yes the upfront investment to get started is a little expensive but I think in the long run it will even out. I am reading that the hive will last along time with a little care.

I need to go read on the internet censorship......see what I get for not watching the news.

I can't figure out how to get the quote feature to work on my phone!!! It is too early to get frustrated about technology!

Fish tank heaters come in different sizes. The heater I used came out of one of my large reef tanks -- it is rated for 150 gal at least. The lowest setting on mine was 65, if we have a few days below freezing that will be the real test. I will post & let everyone know how it works. For me not having to carry water down to the barn will be fabulous!

I dont' have any real experiance so I am no help there but Mr.O'Dell seems to get alot of honey. He said that I would get honey the first year but everything I read says not to expect it.

Jcat I posted a link to a thread here on the BYC that gives help to those using tablets or phones. I think it also talked about someone working on an app for phones.

I don't know about what congress is trying to pass but I would be really mad if they did away with craigs! I am haveing withdrawls already! I sold $40 in g.pigs on it yesterday and have $50 worth of rabbits sold to be picked up later this week. I get good use out of it.

I was surprised to hear you say you didn't get any honey from your bees P&B. I thought they always made lots to spare. Guess I need to do some reading up on the subject. Knew it couldn't be as easy as it sounds. Just like raiseing chickens sounds easy. Well it is ,but it can be a lot of work and stress too!lol

cowboy I'm with you on making pens that I don't have to stoop or crawl into. I was talking about the chickens eating styrafoam the other day. Where does it go? Mine ate all of it I had put on the roof of their pen. You would think it would pass thru and be blowing around on the ground but I don't see any. My neighbor boy has an archery target on a big block of it and my icelands make a bee line for it when I trun them loose. They are slowy gobbling it up!

In the twentys here today to. Had about 12 homes destroyed in near by Franklin ,Ky yesterday from tornadoes!
