***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I planted a peach tree last fall, it seems to have come through "winter" pretty good, I think I will be planting more this coming fall. We have a pecan tree that is really big but has never produced....not sure why....guess I will check with the extention office about checking it out.

You'll need a pollinator. Do you have more than one variety of pecan?

Only if you could find a fool to pay that much

No we don't have others but I am sure there are some around us somewhere. We thought we planted one a few years back only for it to turn out to be something else. I had the same trouble finding them last fall as you seem to be having now.

Has anyone evaluated your orchard for damage done by the shakers? Do your trees seem healthy, other than not setting a crop of nuts each year?

The shakers actually caused limbs and bark to fall. You have to do some serious cleaning up under each tree for someone to bring in the equipment. They want a "clean smooth surface" so we raked and smothed with a blade early in the spring so the spring rains would seal the surface and allowed grass to grow. We then mowed that. Then to have further damage to the tree and no pecans for several years after was a real disappointment. The year we had the guys come, they filled two of those huge canvas sweeper bags from under 27 of our 35 trees.. We've picked up less than 100 pounds since.
