***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I have inc. room and plenty of it. I will set them for $10 a dozen, I get a very good hatch rate. So long as you provide fertile eggs they will hatch fine. Call if interested we are just west of shawnee, Carl 405-878-6381

Really???? Oh wow we live north of Mcloud and I work in Shawnee. How long can I keep them and how do I keep them until I bring them to you? I want to do this right, lol. But we are so green when it comes to hatching eggs. I saw my blue splash rooster servicing our blue splash hen last night even though she isn't laying yet so it is just a mater of time before I will have eggs ready to hatch.

Cathie,
the Maud auction can be a good one, prices vary widely based on who is there and teh quality of the animals as well. There have been some very nice birds through there on a regular basis in the past.
the Junk sale is also worth making as you never know what they will have.
Junk starts at 5, Goats and sheep after junk and Poultry is last be ready for a late evening as it often runs till 11-12. better deals as it gets later and others have spent thier money.

Thanks for the info, I think we will try, I don't get off work until 5 but I might be able to squeez out of here at 4:45 and get there in time for goats (not that we will be buying any, been there, done that, not doing it again, lol). I "need" more birds like I need a hole in my head but well you know how it goes. The moto around here is "Buy them and he will build the coops for them" LOL .

I'm sure Carl will be back soon to tell you but generally after 10 days the hatchablility starts going down hill. I try to keep them in an egg carton so it is easier to turn them every day. You want to keep them in the coolest place in your house.

Thanks you all are so kind to help teach us newbies. We are planning on making Maud tonight just hope to get there by 6 or so. I don't want to miss the chickens, lol. Or guineas if there are any. I NEED female guineas, lol. My boys are driving me insane running around the yard fluffing up with each other and for what? There aren't any girls out there to impress, lol.

i am in Bethel, 5 miles south of I-40 on 102 I set eggs for myself every two weeks on tuesdays. If stored at 75 degrees or below but above 60 degrees, they can be stored up to 14 days. I like to keep them no more than 10 days but 7 is really prefered.

That sounds easy enough we are 10 miles north of 270 off 102, lol. I have heard about tilting them twice a day is that right? I will see how many we can come up with by the time you set eggs again. I need to put my cuckoo maran rooster in with my maran hens so he can start doing his thing. I can't wait to see fuzzy little baby chicks at our house.

If you use an egg carton, cut the bottom out to allow air transfer, keep in cool place out of sun light, do not wash the eggs, tilt at about 40-45 degree angle, turn twice a day once in morning once in the evening.

Cathie, I'm, pretty sure it takes about 2 weeks *after you put a rooster with hens before you'll start getting fertile eggs from that hen. The others will know if the 2 week window is correct.
And here's my Bug House

I made 1 for the Hissers and 1 for the Dubia :) I finally got my 80 egg flats in the mail so I could fix their tub up right. The 8 slats are glued together in 4's and hung by a wire stuck through the top of all the flats together. The bugs all hang out and stick tight to the egg crates and all the tiny poo chunks fall to the bottom. So to clean it once a month all I have to do is lift the flats up by the wire, set them in a spare tub, vacuum the bottom and set the flats back in. I've got 2 empty paper towel rolls for each tub and you just lay those in there on top and bugs will crawl in there to hang out. Then when you want to feed some to the birds all you have to do is grab a paper towel roll and dump the bugs into some other container and feed them. Almost too easy for such an excellent source of protein for my birds. I cut out 2 parts of the lid and glued screen to it for ventilation. Hissers can climb (I haven't seen them climb much at all) so I painted a 3" streak of Vaseline around the top edge of the tub. It's too slippery that way for their sticky feet pads to get a grip. I got an accurate bug-head count when I moved them today and I have 80 bugs. Too cool. I've got a 24" heating pad coming so I can put 12" of it under each tub. I want to make sure I get that before ordering the Dubia. Kass, you're the best! What an excellent idea!
And there's your bug lesson for the day lol

Thanks for the info and the picture. I heard Kass (I think it was her) say she was thinking of useing a expired freezer. I too have a large chest type freezer that does not work (gosh, I mean what good redneck dont have one or two of these out back) Which of the 2 breeds require the least amount of warmth? I think if I get into this and use the freezer I will build a false bottom about the hidth of where the ledge is that covers the moter area. If not, leaning in to fetch bugs and clean may be more than back can handle.
