***OKIES in the BYC III ***

What weekend will you be in OKC?

I couldn't believe anyone paid $19 each for guinea pigs. Of course, I haven't priced them at the Pet store either, so that may have been a good deal when compared to PetsMart. I didn't see the rabbit that sold for $35 up close and personal, but from where I was sitting it did NOT look big enough to be a full Flemish Giant. I saw a Flemish Giant breeder at the auction last night, so maybe he brought it. I just don't think there was any way that rabbit weighed at least 13 lbs, as is required to meet the Standard..

I agree on the Flemish (and on the high price of pigs) When they called it a flemish I thought it must be pretty young, it was just a hair (I made a rabbit joke) bigger than the buck that was in the cage with it

I was over on the meat bird threads and read some stuff that got me thinking. Where is a good place to look up regs on things like indivuals (like myself) butchering and selling poultry or eggs to people. Would even look further and find regs on selling vegies grown on farm etc. Anyone know some of this or where to look for it. Thanks
Most are regulated by the dept of agriculture. The ext office is a big help so is the noble foundation. For the most part if you sale from your place rules are much more relaxed. Some farmers markets have pretty strict rules. If you are wanting to sell produce apply for the plasticulture grant. I can share a few tips on the application process. This will be my first yr with plasticulture. They are putting in 1 acre of plastic & I have to sale 1/2 of what I grow & keep records. The egg packers thing is a joke-- think it is $50 for you to get a piece of paper giving you permission to put eggs in boxes-- but have to have it to sale at farmers market.

The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture has rules on selling eggs and on butchering. I have never looked for the regs on vegetables, but would guess that the Dept of Ag also regulates that.

Forgot all about super bowl-- we don't have tv, except Netflix DVDs.

Guy, If you do a google search you should get some links to the state statues regarding that, I did the same thing a few years ago looking into meat rabbits but remember seeing some about poultry I think maybe it was that rabbits were the same as or considered poultry as far as butchering and selling..it's been a while LOL

I gathered quite a few eggs today and found where my Pekin hen is laying I collected 5 eggs from the nest that made my day, now if I can just find where the other ducks and goose is laying or if they are laying

Well beings the wife is gone, I hope to get alot of stuff I been wanting to do done. You know, stuff that she wasnt quit sure I needed to do. Figure it will be easier asking for forgiveness, than permission. Plus she knows as slow as I am, once it is done it will take me forever to undo it. I plan on moving the couch and building some shelves in the south windows to get some early tomatoe plants going. Would be awesome to have the green house like been talking about on here, but know that will be at least late summer. So this way can get some started at least. Figure she wont mind the couch being out from the wall a couple feet. After all it is only two of us and kesha the boxer so we dont need all that room.

Then I am going to clean out the building that I will be brooding my chicks in so can get my brooder in and running. Have Doc appointment in OKC VA wed. have to talk to surgeon to figure when they are going back in my head to be done with all that mess. All this would take a normal person 2 maybe 3 days, but below normal folk like me will probable be lucky if it all gets done this week. But I dare to dream, and who knows I might get it all done sooner.

Hopefully your wife will forgive you for that, otherwise you may be begging forgiveness from that couch for redecorating without permission.

Big plans this week..... that involves getting 4 10 hour days done and over with. My oldest son has State competition for basketball starting this week so not sure what days he plays. 7yr basketball practice Tuesday night, 9 year practice on Thursday night. Friday I hope we have more fence panels donated (neighbor builds fences and give us all the tear outs). If we do then help dh finishe up the "Coop Condos". We have 4 more pens/coops to finish and then we can start building the 11' x 55' "flight pen" where they can free range. Plus we need to build a new quarentine area (want it further away from my coops) and move the Guinea pen we are building them a new 4' x 9' coop building for nights and a 10x 10 yard for days when we aren't home to let them free range (doesn't happen often but I can see it happening). Oh yeah baby chicks will be moved from the 2 rubbermaid tub brooders to the giant aquarium brooder maybe tomorrow. Then worm everyone with the paste wormer on Friday. DH wants to go to an auction this weekend so will figure out what one to make it to. Oh yeah I have a breastfeeding class to teach on Thursday so that will make my last work day of the week go quickly, lol.

Cowboy the rabbits are going pretty high here to ,from (-12 dollars for just cross breeds.. Wasn't a month ago they were 1-2 bucks here!

P&B the petsmart around here sells the g.pigs for $35 Its amasing that people will spend well over $100 for a pig and a pen and then in a few months they are on craigslist for free! Thats where I come, they don't call me cheap for nothing!lol

C owboy I bet OkCarla would know the regs on veggies, don't they have a sorta commercial home garden going?

Had a late dinner tonight but it was worth the wait. New experiment that turned out really good. Blackened chicken breast over bowtie pasta with alfredo sauce. Delish!
