hope they do better then last year.

I had a question on hatching. I am using a little giant as my hatcher. I moved eggs into it today for hatching and put warm water in it....the temp in the incubator 3 hours since I put them in there is a couple of degrees too low...should I adjust tht temp or wait longer to allow it to regulate some more?

Most thermometers read lower when the humidity is raised. If the temp was right on before adding humidity do not adjust it.
I set the incubator and hatcher in this manner:
Step 1. set ventilation so temps are stable all across. allow to stabilze between readings 1-2 hours
Step 2. set Temperature allow to stabilize after adjustments 1-2 hours
Step 3. adjust humidity using sponges to increase surface area of water. Never adjust humidity with ventilation blocking. Allow to stabilize for 3-4 hours between adjustments.

For the soil for potatoes-- if you have a hard time digging the ground to plant the potatoes, think how hard it will be for that tiny potato to grow roots & offspring. All root veggies need soil that is well draining also- so they are not sitting in water & rotting.
Good luck on the potatoes!

Loose sandy soil is best for teh potatoes, if teh soil is hard they will be very small and hard (dense) since they cannot expand and grow well. I can grow good potatoes outside for frying and other stuff but for big baking potatoes I use a mix of top soil and peat moss in buckets.

Wayne! Coke for breakfast.... Ick.

I've got a quilt question: Is it possible (or maybe the question should be is it desirable) to quilt over the top of a factory-made quilt? The thin, flimsy kind is what I'm asking about. Would the fabric and backing make an adequate base for a hand-made quilt?

Anyone going to the sale in Coweta this Friday?
In the "olden days", my grandmother used old quilts as the basis for a new top. I have found several where the old feed sacking and even some civil war print fabrics were treasures underneath a newer top. They also used flannel sheeting, wool blankets or carded the cotton batting. Some of my great grandmothers nicest hand quilted blankets were done with flannel for the batting. It allowed her to get the teeniest stitches....absolutely gorgeous!

What potatoes grow well in oklahoma, anything besides new potatoes?
You can go to the expense of purchasing seed potatoes for some varieties. But store bought are just as good. Beginning Wed. Firelake grocery in Shawnee will have 10 # of russet for $1 and Yukon Gold 5 # for $1. I love Yukon Gold. Another good variety is Red Pontiac. I ususally find those at the Shawnee Main street Fruit Stand at the best price. I usually have enough quarter sized potatoes from my fall crop to hold over in the bottom crisper in my fridge for my spring potatoes.

Correct, Andy Barnes hosts the show he is the president of teh Great Plains Game bantam club. The show is restricted to game bantams but that is further limited to Cornish, Modern, American and OE. I have never seen an american game there just cornish modern and oe. We will be taking a few Opal and columbian oe.
This is the showe in Pryor? How long is the drive from Shanwee?

They work well for me, let them start to grow some eyes, cut them in half and place them cut side down about 6 inches under teh ground. In about 3-4 weeks a plant will begin to emerge. To maximize production you can use tires, or I cut 5 Gallon bucket bottoms out and place over the plant. Then as teh plant grows I add soft soil to the bucket
The bucket is a good idea. Makes harvest bigger. Buckets are a lot easier to move than the tires.

Hey Carl, Are you going to be around today? Ginger has laid six OE eggs I'd like to get hatched...and few Cochin...and Blue wyandotet....perhaps a total of 18. Could I bring them to you?

Cut them in half and place the cutt side down withthe eyes working up to become the plant. They will start setting roots in 3-5 days. Then can be transplanted easily. I often start then in small plastic containers that are about 6inches deep

I will be here all day. I have no plans to leave. But I could meet you somewhere if it would easier. Bring me all the eggs you want.

Pryor is in the NE part of Oklahoma about 1 1/2 - 2hr drive east on i-40 then north on 69.

My grandfather grew potatoes that way as long as I can remember and we would just go kick over the buckets and collect the potatoes. about 4 buckets is as high as I have ever gotten with each plant but a stack that high has a lot of potatoes in it. New potatoes at top, frying and boiling in teh middle, and baking at the bottom it works out nicely.

Well I could order some, but aren't most hatchery's not shipping for another month or so? I thought they wouldn't ship in winter. Believe it or not there are NO chickens close by that I know of. None on Craigslist and none posted at Atwoods. Maybe I could try the Co Op?

The hatcheries will ship and will often offer specials right now. What are you looking for specifically I am sure there are some nearby to you just not advertised at this time since prices will go up in teh next month and reach a peak by may-june. Most hatches right now are for started birds in teh peak sales season. prices are still lower than they will be so hatching now makes for larger numbers to sell in teh peak.
If you order from a hatchery get 100 and sell what you dont want in month, you will come out ahead. But you have to do this quickly as teh market will start to fall by mid summer.

PoCo like the others said, its fine to do that. If you are using it for batting you will want a top that is darker so the colors won't show thru. I hit the thrift store and get all the blankets I can and use them for batting too. You can sometimes buy brand new blankets cheaper than cotton! They tend to make the quilt a little heavier but thats not a bad thing on a cold night.!lol

Patiently waiting for a trader friend to show up either today or tomorrow from across the state. She is bringing me a satin mini buck and dwarf buck rabbits and we are doing some chicken tradeing as well!

Had these triplets born early this morning! Guess these are my valentine present! lol First albinos I have ever had! First pic is mom a couple of days ago, about to pop!

I don't think I can handle 100, even for a little while. I did see small order specials on a few sites. I would rather get them locally, but if that's not possible I will order online. I'm not picky about the breed as long as they're heat and cold hearty. I would like Barred Rocks, but I don't have to have them. Older pullets instead of chicks are better, but I know they're harder to find.
