***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Kass has you thought of doing a cold frame for your seedlings? You could throw one together with the supplies you have already gathered. Put your seedlings out during the day & carry them back in on nights when it is going to be cold.

That's probably what I will end up doing, especially w/ some seeds I really want a head start on.

I think this is going to be a mistake, I am not feeling well but I'm going in to work anyway. We'll see how this goes

Well I was planning on going to the auction tonight, especially to see if I could snatch up a few of mjs Cochins, but it looks like that's not in the cards for me this time. Hope everyone that goes has a great time as usual and have a bit of lasagna for me! :)

Morning Okies!

Lisa - It was wonderful meeting you. You seem to know everyone, and you were busy, busy, busy all night. Sorry I didn't make more of an effort to chat.

Joe - I was sorely tempted to bid on the NH roo. What I'm really interested in is some eggs. Send me a PM. I'd like to get a dozen and I can paypal eggs + shipping.

The Coweta auction was great. There were birds, birds, some bunnies and then more birds. I had to leave around 9:30, so I didn't get to see how everything sold. For the most part, I think both buyers and sellers were happy. Prices were reasonable, so I don't think anyone felt like he got stung.

I bought ten baby chicks for $2 each chick. They're nearly all feathered, and they are eating and drinking like chow hounds. Most look like barred rocks, but they could be Dominiques. I can't really tell about the combs yet. There are a couple light babies in one batch. I'll have to wait until they grow a bit to figure out what they are. Looks like more girls than boys, too. That's always nice!

I also bought an old metal brooder. After I clean it and put some babies in it I'll post pictures. I paid $30 for it, and I feel like it's a gem. I may change my mind when I've got the hose and scrub brushes out. It may not be easy to clean. It's on tall legs, has three sections with wire bottoms, and there are metal poop trays under each section.

There was an old Sportsman incubator that went too high, I thought. I paid less for a newer model, but that's the mystique of auctions. People get caught up in bidding. Met some nice folks who'd never been to an auction. They bought some really nice laying hens. They also got two boxes of baby chicks after they peeked at mine. I hope they enjoy their new chickens. Roosters are calling... Have a great day, everyone.

Thanks for the update on the Coweta auction. It is always fun to hear about the bargains and the occasional too much paid for equipment. I don't think you can say anyone ever pays too much for a bird or rabbit they really want since price for them is subjective. Incubators on the other hand are available by mail order.

Morning all, I need some ideas/help on a turkey, cockrel and rooster problem. The cockrel has been challenging the alpha rooster for a few weeks now ( to be expected ), the alpha rooster had kept the 8 month old cockrel in his place until the middle of this week. Now the tom turkey has joined in and has enlisted the help of one of the turkey hens to gang up on the alpha rooster. The poor alpha rooster has gotten beaten up, had his comb and back of his neck pecked and bloodied quiet a bit, he was found cowering/hiding in the laying shed, they have been keeping him off of the feed and water. So far the turkey tom and the cockrel have been caught and put in seperate pens with their own feed and water, the alpha rooster is out free ranging with all of the hens (25 of them, I know he can't cover all of the hens efficently) and the two turkey hens. What further steps do I need to take ? Was planning on leaving the cockrel and turkey tom penned up for about a week( wanted to change their standing in the flock) and go from there. Do I need to trim thethe cockrel and turkey toms beaks ? De spur the two Or do I need to let them all out togather and let them finish working it out? I realy do not want to loose the alpha rooster or let this type of behaviour continue, as I wonder if this kind of ganging up will continue with the other flock mates as time goes on. They have had some pretty nasty fights. I would appreciate any ideas or suggestions.

I may want some blue NN as well. I told cowboy to keep me in mind if he had extras, but think it will e a while before he has any. My nephew has taken to NN & DD is in love with blue birds this season-- so would make both of them happy. Don't know how many we want or need. Maybe 6-12.... Maybe more if they are available & we have the brooder space.

We woke to an exciting morning. DD woke up eager to do her chores since we are going to winter jam tonight. She went down to find all the dogs inside the barn going after something. So of course she walks in to find they had corned a skunk. I see her running up the hill towards the house shouting to get the riffle. By the time she gets up her I didn't have to ask what for...... The smell spoke for itself. DH took the riffle down to the barn to take care of the skunk. Now he stinks too!
Wish I could find a cheap riffle to keep @ the barn. Seems we shoot more things around the barn then anywhere else.
Hope everyone enjoys the auction tonight! I am taking 5 tween girls to dinner & a concert. Think the auction would probably be alot more relaxing. I will make the next Newcastle sale-- and bring RIR & EE chicks.

Here are two photos from the Coweta sale. I didn't take pictures of the adjacent barn area that was filled with cages. I wish now that I'd taken pictures of the peacocks and the big cochins that were near the back of the barn.
