***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Kass my curisoty is getting the best of me,what type of building is that behind you in the Gpa picture? The windows make it look like a house but I never saw one built out of a qunset type building before!

It is a quanset hut, but built into a home, this was taken in Lordsburg, NM I don't know if it is common there or not, but you seldom see them here built into homes. Seems to me they would be a better choice for tornado alley.

told ya'll it was scary! even scared the needle lady!

Still sick, but feeling a little better, going to try and go to work today, we'll see how they treat me! lol

When/where is the poultry show in Pryor?

Also, Maribeth, I'm looking forward to meeting you at the beekeeping meeting next weekend. Which reminds me, I need to get my powerpoint presentation done.

Nana I did order some grasshopper stuff yesterday from planet natural. It isn't noLo but works the same. I bought 5 lbs since it exp quickly. The next option was 50lbs & it wasn't too expensive-- but it needs to be kept in the fridge to extend the shelf life & I can't imagine fitting an extra 50 lbs of anything in my fridge! I will report back on the pea shoots if they thrive.
Yesterday I also order fly bags, since I am already seeing a few flies. I want to be proactive, if we get rain I prefer not to have the flies take over.
P&B I never try to catch the peafowl with a large beach towel or small blanket. I toss it over them to prevent from having to combat the flapping wings. I still usually see a feather or 2 that falls out.

My mean rooster still physically appears fine, but can't crow! He tries to crow but only squeaks come out.

Tractor & plow are in place & the 1 acre garden plot will start being worked today!! So thankful that the guy that does our hay is able to prep the garden. Finished drinking my coffee now off to do chores before my sister gets here with her kids. Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Oh 1 more thing---- P&B or anyone. Planet Natural sells bee habitats. Not honey bee set ups, but houses for bees..... Similar to bats houses. They say set in a spot that has a good wind block (I personally don't think. That type of place exist here). The bees will move in & stay close by to pollinate your garden. Cover the box & move it into the barn for the winter.

Any thoughts on this? I do like the thought of honeybees-- just can't sell DH on setting up hives, he thinks it is dangerous!

morning folks- what a shock the temp was this morning!! all the roos are going, no sleeping in- got down 2 cups of coffee and ready to get going for the day... keep you prayers going and fingers crossed that the only problem with the laptop will be the powercord.. it comes in today and hope that will be it...

back in a bit

Neil, I am looking forward to meeting you at the Oklahoma State Beekeeper Association conference in Ponca City next Saturday, March 3. It should be a good meeting and I understand from your fellow beekeepers in the NEOBA club that you are a terrific speaker.

Oklahoma Apiary laws don't allow "keeping" honeybees in a hive that can't be opened for inspection. Bees don't read very well so there will always be honeybees and native bees that locate themselves in hollow logs, walls of homes, etc. That said, if you are successful in attracting native bees of some variety, I wouldn't try and cover them and put them away in the barn for the winter. Bees have been surviving for centuries without any intervention for cold weather and my personal thought is that they will do as well or better in their natural Oklahoma habitat, without any wrapping. I don't even cover the screen bottom on my hives during the winter, as moisture in the hive is more likely to kill the bees than cold air.

Lemon smell, such as from lemon oil or lemon grass is a natural attractant for honeybees. Some beekeepers use it as a swarm attraction, to get honeybees to move into the hive location of the beekeeper's choice.

Thanks P&B I will sow a flat of lemon balm today. The seeds are so tiny I can't use plug trays. I have several other seeds I bought just to attract bees. I need to start putting labels on my seeds noting why I bought them..... Sometimes I look @ the pack & wonder what I am going to do with them, but I know I wouldn't have bought them if I didn't have a plan!

I do the same thing, will research a problem get some seeds to try for the solution then by the time it is to plant them can't remember why I have them. I am horrible about keeping records, I'm going to try and be better this year (but I say that every year)
