I am pretty well run doun and don't have the stringth to work on the new breeder house today

been waiting for a candeling report about your eggs annynews yet ?????

Oops! Sorry. I candled eggs on Saturday. Of the 10 NH, 9 are forming well and one was clear. Quite a few wigglers were head-butting the shell from the inside when they saw the candling light. Both the OE were clear. One of the OE had a tiny, tiny hair-line crack that I didn't notice when I set the hatch, but it was visible when I candled. I'm wondering if USPS had an oopsie when handling the box. I know your rooster to hen ratio is good, so I'm thinking the trip was just too much for the three that didn't take. Shipping is such a gamble. I've had some hatches of shipped eggs as high as 90%, but I've had others in which only one of a dozen made it through lock down. You just can't know. I wish we could coat egg boxes with pixie dust so that drops or bumps couldn't hurt the eggs. I'll be sure to post pictures when these little German Fluff Nuggets spend their first day in the brooder. Thank you soooo much for sending the eggs. You'll have to let me know what I can bring for you to N.E.O.C.S.

Our sick rooster is getting better with B12 liquid given one drop in the morning and one in the evening. He is eating medicated chick starter right now. I didn't give him any hope on Monday but today he is taking 5-6 steps around the coop and then laying down to rest and then getting back up. I know he is only at about 40% strength right now but he is improving.

Robin I can tell you that I wasn't able to find Rooster Booster (same thing) at any of the farm stores so what I am leading to is either MFA or WAlmart is your choices. MFA wasn't open on the day that I needed it so not sure they carry it either.

i have a few open pens, but most are homebuilt sheds. i make most of them 6 ft wide, cause that is 3 peices of metal.
try to make them about 12 ft long. all mine look a little ratty, cause i aint no carpenter!

A heads up would of been nice, I only have one that needs a trim & I could of brought you the cage I borrowed.

I made it to church this morning & back home to run the tiller one more time & of course the belt broke (and wedged) so I didn't get that finished & nothing planted. I did plant three more grape plants so I'm looking forward to those next year. Fed chickens & was abused by one of the roo's. Good thing he is a little thing & a show bird or he would be a gonner. Eating a bite & going back for evening services.......when I get home it's time to make laundry soap & de-bone some chicken.

Hm... I have a duckling acting kinda funny. He acts like somethings wrong with his leg. The way he holds himself makes me think he's a runner. Is it normal for runners to kinda plop around when they don't have a bunch of space as chicks? When I spook him he seems fine, but when he's meandering around the brooder he just looks funny.

ask kenneth about his egg gathering this afternoon. he has a BIG oriental of some sort, and the chicken was winning for the first couple or three rounds. but the fat guy had more staying power and a bigger foot!

it was hillarious!

chicken actually did win, he was fine when we left and kenneth was limping around whining about his leg!

What is on the floor of your brooder? He could be slipping if there isn't anything wrong with his leg.

Another thing to watch is that ducks really need water that is deep enough to dip their entire heads into. It keeps their nares (nostrils) clean.

That is why it is best to brood ducks and chicks seperatly. the ducks can get the chicks wet and they will chill plus the ducks do not need as much heat as a chick does. Make sure that the ducks can get away from the heat source.

Runners are best known for their pop bottle shape and fast waddle. they don't usually go anywhere in first gear.

To rule out leg problems catch the little fella and check the leg joints. If they feel hot or are swollen there could be a problem. If he is favoring that leg and is unable to straighten it out it may be a sign of a slipped tendon.
