***OKIES in the BYC III ***

That's what my great grandparents used to do. She voted straight dem and he voted straight rep, at least they were consistant :)

So I was reading up on crested ducks, I had no idea about the breeding the like resulting in brain less birds
sickbyc.gif
and all the defects that can happen too. That's just awful. Why isn't that common knowledge? Even Storey's guide to ducks downplays the bad genetics, it just says about 25% won't live.... Missing an important part of the story yet again storey, thanks. No wonder my crested duckling is acting special, he probably is.

Started 32 tomato plants today.... I have a brown thumb, great with animals, awful with plants..... wish me luck.

With the crested breeds the crest is supposed to develop on top of the skull with the bottom side being closed off.

It is known as a vaulted skull. But with some birds the vault doesn't close off and the brain can be easily damaged because it lacks the support on the top side. That is why crested breeds have more neorological problems then other birds do.

For those of you that havent noticed the patern here, I LIKE BLUE CHICKENS

Seems a lot of us have caught that addiction! Blue Cochins, Blue Wyandotte, Blue Quail d'Anvers, Blue Laced Splash Wyandotte...

Lookie!!!! My first feather babies hatched at Carl's. We had 13 of 14 eggs hatch. We have 5 black australorps, 5 blue splash marans, and 3 golden salmon marans. They are all settling in nicely. We only have one that isn't as active and it hatched about 2 hours ago so a little behind the curve.

Cute babies and great hatch rate.

just wondering where to get a necropsy done? Lost spice, and really am hoping to find out what is going on-

Call the number for the NPIP testing. The state can do it but I don't know the cost. Another place to check would be the OSU Vet. school up in Stillwater.

Wrap the bird in a plastic bag and refrigerate it. Putting it in the freezer will destroy cells and make it untestable.

That's what I was reading (sorry I tend to over dramatize

no idea where I get that from) how the brain in those protrude hence why they don't get beyond hatch. I'm just surprised that's not something that is talked about. I went and looked at ducks before I ordered mine and no one ever mentioned anything about the crested. I hadn't read up on them cause I didn't intend to get any that's just what I ended up with since the feed store I ordered through decided to do an assortment instead of the couple of breeds I mentioned and most of their order looked like they were Peking, which I don't want. So I picked out a few that I thought wouldn't be peking and then the one funny looking one. Even there they didn't say anything and the woman there tends to come off as a know it all (I'm sure she intends to be helpful, but ykwim). When he started acting a little odd and I went looking that's when I found out. Just surprised it's not well advertised.

Here ia an article about the Mad. Games

And here is an excerpt from another article

Otherwise they are always very friendly to their hens or little chicks, and to humans. Often the rooster took one, two or even three of his children, under his plumage, to warm them in the colder nights there. He was leading them by daytime like the hens do. The Malagache are famous, to adopt small chicks, some times they have different ages of chicks to worry about. The rooster or brood hens are defending their family with their lifes.

Wow you all are a chatty bunch tonight. Was working on something else for a couple of hours and when I get back on had 6 pages to read.

Oops... I meant the wish list for supplies. I sure can't help with the chickens!
You know we can have a wish-list or have list for supplies/stuff. I just ask that I don't get a laundry list cuz then the list is going to be hard for anyone to navigate. Let me know what everyone thinks about that. K?

I just PMd Rebecca with my wish and it sounded like I was writing Santa with my Christmas list. POOPS is more exciting to me than Christmas.

Well of course you saw, I had my name at the top of the wish-list.

Benefit of volunteering, plus I get to see all the cool stuff people have to offer first. Is that wrong???

Thank you. I am not giving up. I was just upset. I feel better now that I realized I only lost one instead of all three. We are going to tighten the security around here though. I saw that hawk fly right over my house just a few days ago. I think he was stalking my big chickens trying to get up enough nerve to try for them. When it saw those babies it just couldn't help itself. Or it was some other animal. It is just odd that it was found outside the pen. I appreciate everybody letting me vent when I was upset and all the nice comments. You guys are all great people!

We have all been there and it really sucks! If you need some ideas for predator proofing just ask. Also it sounds like a raccoon attack. Opossums usually eat out the chest, the taking off the head is a raccoon thing. Plus think about how big a raccoon is, they can and will carry off a 15lb birds and they can run is packs (not sure what you call a group of raccoons). If there is one and it finds food, more will come.

Oh yea that's right I knew about the show girls, just don't think of them as chickens. (

A week or so ago a friend asked me about selling his horse at auction. I explained that right now the market is depressed and there would be a $20.00 coggins test fee plus comission and the fuel to haul it down there and he just might not come out ahead. I told Teva what I had told Randy and she agreed with what I had told him.

Mon. he told me that he gave the horse away and when I told Teva about it she said that if she knew that he would have given it away she would have taken it. So Tues. another friend that knows Randy asked me if I wanted a free horse and I questioned him and it seems that the others did not come and get the horse.

I came home and told Teva that we had to go pick a horse up Wed. night that the other deal had fell through. So now there is an older Shetland out with the big horses and he has been known to bite and kick if he doesn't get his way.

Moral of the story is. be really careful about what you say and to whom!!!!

Personally I think a list for supplies would be good. A lot of us have things laying about that are not used anymore.

And what about a display for home-made chicken items like feeders and waterers and such? That would really help out the folks new to the fancy.
