***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Robin Might as well let them set and hatch you some chicks to play with, then you can take them to the june meet and get rid of what you don't want. Your silkies have started a molt.odd for them to do it now but they have fluffy feathers scattered everywhere!lol

Will Jack bring eggs to poops?? Or selling blue chicks? DD is really into blue birds this season. I didn't want to get in a bidding war last night over eggs! Some of them went way too high.
For gardening site I have used garden web for years, loads slow lots of ads but has everything you need! I also use Dave's garden (it's $20 a yr though). Homesteading today also has a good garden & preserving forum. As far as garlic grows I plant mine in the fall. Half of what I planted looks amazing. The other half has had frequent visits for the rabbits & goats.
I spent the entire day on the tractor running the tiller. Used a full tank of diesel. Told DH the guy we bought it from lied, he said the tractor would run all day on a tank of diesel. It only lasted about 6 hours. Wish we could drive the truck for 6 hours on 5 gallons! Told my girls they may not see me in the morning, I am scared my aching body might not let me roll out of bed.
Thankful for the rain we had! However, looking forward to the nice weather we are suppose to have the next few days.

I'll ask him. He has 2 Sportsman that arte full right now. I know he sold some blues today. Would you like him to save you some eggs or chicks?

I spent the day outside too. I am very stiff now and got a little sun on my neck.

I don't think I'll ever be able to let the chickens out with them. I was just hoping to get them to stop drooling by the cage. LOL
depending on the dog, i had to work with mine for months before i could trust them with them- i leashed them near the pen- stayed with them at first when we let the chickens out, would take them for walks when the chickens free ranged- and only one dog at a time- watched their body language- each case will be different- one dog will round the ducks up whether they need it or not... watched her one day herd them around the house 5 times before i finally realized what she was doing- these dogs were dump dogs, i am thinking with the poodle, possibly get in there with her on a leash and work with her- the weimaraner breed is a birding breed, so she might need alot more work.... the big thing is to work with them, so they understand the chickens are part of the family

any recent pics of them?? mine are fluffing up nice, and the roo from coral has put weight on and is quite a looker!

yeah i was kind of thinking of selling extras in june, i have a couple buff orps from the feed store to replace poor spice- i must agree, i guess sickness goes in spurts- i lost those 2 and everyone else looks fine- but the run is so muddy, i hope no one gets sick in the mudpuddles...

Hi everyone!! What a gorgeous day it's been. When I got out of school I cleaned out the coop my dad had used a few years ago and set up places for them to roost and lay eggs. Although I only have chicks and it will be a long time before the girls do that. So I'm going to put chicken wire around it and on top to keep hawks and animals from jumping in and cut a little door for them to go in and out as they please. But my question is. How do you all keep snakes from getting your chickens?? I mean I know it will probably happen. But is there any tricks?? I got a long time before moving them outside. They just got moved into a swimming pool brooder. It's so cute watching them run around that thing. :)

Hi BB, Welcome! I'm a newbie here too, but just today the lady I got my chicks from told me her solution. She's only a couple miles from me out in the country and snakes are everywhere around here. They take empty water bottles, 16-20 oz. size, poke holes all over the bottle, and put a dozen mothballs in them and replace the cap. She puts them along the outside of the fence of their runs. She says snakes hate mothballs and they've only seen 1 small snake since she started doing this a couple years ago. They have multiple coops big and small - some old sheds, some converted horse stalls, some raised off the ground - and huge runs spread over about an acre just for the chickens, and they have hundreds of chickens running all over the place!

Anybody else try this?

Think we are also bringing a Buff Cochin trio - bantam.

gonna try that- haven't had a problem here, except the tiny garden snake got in the house and ate a pair of finches... and a large one will go in the duck run and take the eggs... last year all the guineas and chickens and ducks followed a snake all over the property, it was so funny to watch

DD prefers eggs, but she gets excited at seeing pretty chicks too. I have no personal preference. Whatever works best for Jack.
