***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I have quite a variety of chicken print cotton fabrics....am considering sewing some items for the raffle for POOPS.
Would there be any interest in pot holders, 18" doll clothes, little girl sundress (size 2 - 4, or a bonnet in cute fabrics?

Hot pads or a bonnet would be high on my list to acquire

Hi BB, Welcome! I'm a newbie here too, but just today the lady I got my chicks from told me her solution. She's only a couple miles from me out in the country and snakes are everywhere around here. They take empty water bottles, 16-20 oz. size, poke holes all over the bottle, and put a dozen mothballs in them and replace the cap. She puts them along the outside of the fence of their runs. She says snakes hate mothballs and they've only seen 1 small snake since she started doing this a couple years ago. They have multiple coops big and small - some old sheds, some converted horse stalls, some raised off the ground - and huge runs spread over about an acre just for the chickens, and they have hundreds of chickens running all over the place!

Anybody else try this?

Thanks. I will try this out.

Woooo Hooooo!!!!! Just got awesome news. My niece was born w/ a heart valve problem that was going to result in open heart surgery, but the Dr's have been letting her get older and bigger for the surgery for the best possible outcome, and been keeping an eye on it so it didn't get to bad to do the surgery. Anyway she had a cardiology appt today and we found out it is self correcting. She is just at 1 year old now, and they need to do some more testing to make sure just how much it is going to self correct, but it is looking like open heart surgery is not going to be needed.

This is wonderful news....and a Blessing! Is this the little cutie you posted pictures of a while back?

Hi Everyone; I'm new to BYC but have been lurking awhile. We are in Norman OK out by the lake and our baby chicks are now 1 1/2 weeks old. 2 EE's, 3 Buff Orpingtons, 2 Barred Rocks, 2 Light Brahmas and 2 Cuckoo Marans. I'm simply in love! They are doing great and lots of fun but I'm wondering when/if I should let them have greens and if so, what kind. I put chick grit in their brooder yesterday just in case they should begin eating greens. Any thoughts? My grandmother had close to 5000 chickens -- all free to move about and lay at will back in the early 70's and so I grew up with chicks. Now continuing the tradition on a much smaller scale.

Welcome to BYC...I give turnip greens, spinach, and use scissors to cut rye grass into 1/8 inch - 1/4 inch little pieces for the babies. They can't handle the longer grass..it pack up. They nibble the other greens into little bites.
Evening everyone! A big WELCOME to all you new folks. Jump right in tells all about yourself and your birds. We try to be one big happy family here.

Rainy morning but finally cleared some this afternoon. It was nice to be able to have some time to work outside after supper.
I set up my old hand cranked meat grinder and ground up some of the turnips that have wintered over. Did roots and greens all together. The chickens enjoyed them! I tried just pulling up the plants and giving them to them but they wouldn't touch them that way. Glad I was able to find this at an auction and it only cost $5 ,so I will be grinding up all the garden waste for the birds this year.
Got me a new pair of bantams today,I think they are very nice. They are Columbian Rocks.

Beautiful birds Wayne!!

ok guys- another broody - one of the bantam cochins...as flat as a pancake... so since fall, i have had 4 broodies, and now licorice and olivia.... good grief... so what is the best way to break them?? or... i could just sell the chicks?? i do have some lf cochins cooking in the bator now, plan on selling hatching eggs in the future...

And from a flat pancake to a full blown growling balloon... LOL I use a cage hung from the wall without the poop tray. Put the girl in there with plenty of food and water and if need be, direct a fan up on her from below...helps to cool down the body temperature. Usually takes a couple of days unless she has been broody for a week...then it takes a lot longer....believe me... a lot longer. I'll have to post pictures of the girl in the cage this week.

Hello,

I would love to know where and when is the Newcastle auction? I finally found the Blanchard auction after driving all over the countryside. I think my husband is trying for sainthood after following my directions forever from a gps phone with ADD that decides to take scenic detours. Not once did the man growl or say anything!
