***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Hi All, I hope everyone enjoyed this good weather today.

I have been thinking about buying some hatching eggs on Ebay. Has anyone here done this before? What was your experience? Are there any special things to look out for?

Also want to say thanks for all the good info on NPIP testing on the board today. I am calling tomorrow to get my flock tested. I am considering going through the course myself. I was just wondering if someone is allowed to test their own birds?

Take care. I think I am off to play in the garden some more!

Well, shoot.

I should have listened to my gut. I was leery about getting rid of some of my best dogs, but thought my two Pyrs and a lab would be enough deterrent. I was wrong. The two females tangled with something last night that almost got the best of them. They did their job, because I lost zero critters, but they were put through the ringer. The Pyr is all marked up, and the lab had to go in for stitches... $375 worth. The male Pyr, best fighter in the bunch, doesn't have a mark on him, so I figure he was lazing about while the girls did all the dirty work. Man, I could kick myself.

Going to go out tonight to see if whatever it was comes back.

Then I'm going to start shopping for another LGD.

Hope the two girls heal quick. Wonder what it was?

I need to find someone in my area that can come test my birds for NPIP...need to certify them. I'm located outside Inola, and I'll have 18 Call ducks, 3 large fowl chickens, 7 bantams, 3 guineas, 1 Runner duck, and 4 Sebastopols....in case the number of birds dictate the cost of testing. I have been careful to only purchase NPIP birds, but still need the status for my farm.
Please PM me with the cost and your info...I won't be ready to test till after April 25th, as that is when the last of my Call ducks arrive. Oh yeah...have a goose sitting on eggs that will have hatched around the first of April so not sure if they will need testing, too.
Thanks so much!

There is a state contact number they will test for free, then pay the $5 for teh certificate.

One of my chicks has nasty watery eyes. Any ideas what it could be and what I should do?
Could be respiratory related. Anytime I have needed to medicate birds I use tylan 50 injectable. I tried sulmet & wasn't happy with the results. Tylan is seems to work almost immediately. Not sure about injecting a chick. By chick do you mean still under a heat lamp?

Hello,

I would love to know where and when is the Newcastle auction? I finally found the Blanchard auction after driving all over the countryside. I think my husband is trying for sainthood after following my directions forever from a gps phone with ADD that decides to take scenic detours. Not once did the man growl or say anything!

Take I-44 south and take the Newcastle exit, continue south thru town. It is about a 1/4 mile south of Main st. (stop light) on the east side of the road just past the park at the AG Barn. There is usually a sign out there.

Things to watch for in hatching eggs, NPIP certified, how they package the eggs, has fertility been tested, Stay away from anyone claiming to sell "Show Quality" eggs (they may come from show stock, but anyone serious about showing is not selling eggs) This is always a buyer be ware situation if you do not know the resources you are aquiring from.

Buster sorry about the attack, glad the dogs kept everyone safe.

Tried calling to find out more about the porter hill auction in Elgin. I didn't get an answer, so I will try again tomorrow. Just want to know if it is a one time deal or if it will be a new regular auction. DD only has about 3 or 4 dz eggs hatching this week so we will probably take chicks to the Elgin sale since it is much closer.

I had a LONG day. Tried to use tractor radiator hose began leaking. Took it off ran to town got a new one & put it on --- then the PTO shaft on the tiller wanted to be a pain! Tomorrow will be the second try to lay my irrigation & plastic mulch. Hope for a calm day. Once the plastic is down the real work begins.

Heading back out to work until dark. Frozen burritos were for dinner, one kid was happy. The other threw a fit, but I had been too busy to think about dinner.
