***OKIES in the BYC III ***

It's miserable out there. I'm glad I got out early enough to beat the rain. The wind is throwing branches around. I hope we don't have too many come down. I want to mow in a few days and I hate to spend the first hour picking up fallen tree limbs.

I lost a big RIR hen today. She was egg bound on Saturday, passed the egg late Sunday, and this morning I found her in the corner of the coop under the roost. She didn't look like she'd fallen, just sitting in the corner alone. Her eggs have been getting larger and larger; and many have been double yolkers. She was 3 1/2 years old and seemed in perfect health otherwise. I don't understand enough about the mechanics of egg laying to know if the increase in egg size over the last year is symptomatic of a problem. Does anyone know?

Sorry about your hen, I don't know the answer either. We lost one this week too, seemed perfectly healthy just found dead w/o a scratch or mark.

Ksane that is the one I have! I bought it in the fall 2 yrs ago. Imagine that is why I was able to get a coupon code. Most people are not incubator shopping in October.
If I remember correctly they had posted the coupon code on their Facebook site & someone on BYC posted it here. Our Eco has been used several dozen times. All we ever have to do is add water. I would like the humidity pump, but I think for the money we can add water every other day.

As soon as I het the submit button on that last post I knew exactly what the answer was gonna be. Actually I was thinking about it. I have two coops in a shared run. The small coop is abut 3-1/2 ft x 5 ft and the 3 older chickens have it to themselves. The bigger coop is about 6 ft x 10 ft and the 10 red star girls have it. The run is 20 ft x 30 ft and completely enclosed with a temporary divider in it till everyone gets used to living together. Is there enough room for all of them? Also, after scouring the web for pictures, I think the little one looks like it's a partridge cochin roo. Since I already have an older roo, I need a hen for this little guy. Any suggestions?

I'm headed for Shawnee in a bit and wondered if anyone in the area would like to enable me since I'm feeling like a mush head over this little one, or at least point me in the right direction.....

Do you have an actual humidity meter to tell what your humidity is? If you do let me know exactly what you set them at and I'll do it the same way you do. Or do you just add water every few days and not keep track?

Afternoon Everyone!
Holy Moly it is raining buckets and I am totally okay with that. We need this rain so bad. I had dust blowing around out here yesterday that was awful. Of course I have two peafowl on my front porch looking in the window giving me stink eye.
I have a peeping peacock!!!

Shoot, don't ask these guys or you'll come home with more chicks than you can fit in your car lol
Good luck finding one :)

Hm... I forget what the measurements are supposed to be now..... right direction -> Atwoods -> home with at least 6 -> bring any extras you decide not to keep to POOPS :)

It's going to hard to find one little pullet for your three week old chick...not all are easy to sex. You might have to get several and then keep the girls and either eat or rehome the boys.

I have a little gauge we bought @ the pet store in the reptile section. I think if we fill the water tray full it only last about 3 days. When I hatched in the Eco I put a wet washcloth or sponge on the bottom & it would keep the humidity well. Only time I ever had to adjust the temp on the Eco is when I took it to school for the class to use. Think the air was blowing on it & made the temp fluctuate. If you order the incubator you are going to use to learn to part with some chicks! But if you set them & know you are hatching for a certain person or to only keep a certain color it makes it easier! You will love the Eco!

Hello Okies! I have been away again. My mom in TX had surgery, and I started a new work project that I have to drive a lot for, so am away from the computer. But I am back for now and looking forward to posting more - although I give up on trying to catch up!

So good to see you back. Hoe your mom heals quickly.

Thanks for the help! I'm getting very worried about getting them in the ground. I would have done it this weekend, but DH can't make up his mind about getting a chainsaw new or used

Not sure if I said this before or not, we've got to take down some trees in the area I want to plant them, I may just change my plans. Okay, what do you mean by amending the soil?

Some gardeners say you should add (amend) things like peat moss, manure, or compost to the soil in the planting hole. I've found the trees do bette rin our clay soil if the compost is used on top of the planting mound as mulch.

POCO sorry to hear about your RIR hen.
