Thanks for the link, Les. I did know some diseases were transferable through the egg but I certainly didn't realize the respiratory diseases could be one of them. I can't find where it says those particular diseases are passed through the egg though. I think I'm missing it. That's scary stuff.

We are going to try to make it and might bring a table top plucker and a couple of incubators to sell. We are switching to tub style and cabinet, respectively.

Get a big cabinet.. there are several large CornishX breeder farms that sell eggs to the hatcheries by the thousand count could save you a lot of $$

Yes they could have been, There are many diseases that are egg transmittable. Most of the Mycoplasms are egg transmittable and they cause resp. distress.

They can be tested for the various diseases but the most reliable way to test is to euthanize them and then do a necropsy on them. But even then there may not be anything solid come of it.

Poultry disease control is geared to the big producer where it is more cost effective to cull an entire barn of birds and start over then to go ahead and feed them out for another few weeks and then have the carcasses rejected at slaughter.

That's what I figured. The good news is it doesn't seem to be transferring to the other chickens. I separated them quickly, but the other Barred Rock chicks from that hatch (I assume since they were all the same size) all got it anyway. Well I still have 10 chickens all together and that's not bad. With chicken math I will have too many soon enough. Or is that not enough according to chicken math?

if they were hatched here, they had to be infected when shipped, I sterilize the eggs before they are set and teh incubator and hatcher every week.

Wow. Thanks, Carl. That's a great idea. What brand and model would you suggest? And how do I track down these breeder farms? And would they sell to a little guy like me?

Oh goodness no, Carl.Mine are healthy and flying and eating like crazy. It's RetiredArmyWife who's having problems with hers. I do know you sterilize everything on a regular basis.

if they were hatched here, they had to be infected when shipped, I sterilize the eggs before they are set and teh incubator and hatcher every week.

With what you do it will help to prevent what is called lateral transmission from feather dander and the biologicals of the newly hatched chicks.

An egg transmitted disease is inside the egg even before laying. that is why the hatcheries vaccinate eggs before incubation. As you know most hatcheries contract out for their hatching eggs and that is just a little more security.

The only flocks that are truely disease free are the layers that are used to produce eggs that vaccines are grown in. From what I have learned they are kept under strict labratory conditions to prevent cross-contamination.

Just got back from getting lost in Logan County.... I now appreciate my crappy road leading to my house

There was a Great Dane someone found and posted looking for the owner on craigslist. I offered to take him if they didn't show..

I'm a sucker for big dogs. This poor kid is blind and recovering from what looks like a very rough life. They have been taking care of him for a week and he still looks like skin and bones. I really want to give him a happy home, but it looks like he doesn't agree with cats. Dang it. I'm going to give him a few days to see if he comes around. I sure hope I don't need to find a home for a special needs large breed dog.
