***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Robin - I candled your eggs before I put everything back in the incubator after moving it upstairs today. One of the eggs from Joe and one of the eggs wrapped in red had blood rings. The remaining nine are growing well. The incubator was back up to 99.5 within ten minutes of its relocation. I doubt there will be any ill effects.

The restoration crew just left. They've pumped out all the water, set up fans and dehumidifiers, and isolated the basement from the rest of the house. They'll be back Saturday to check the floors and walls. We've got a fancy schmancy plastic curtain with zipper at the base of the stairs. It looks like ET ought to be walking through at any minute.

Poco Pollo - Wow, what a mess. Sorry you're having to deal with that, but aren't you glad you opened the photo box? :) Neat pictures.

Ksane - I hope you're able to find a good home for the animals. They sound like sweethearts.

I checked on the hatching chicks earlier and now there are five. One more is almost completely zipped so should be out of it's shell soon. They're tiny chicks anyway (Seramas) but look even smaller next to their large fowl surrogate mother. Will post a pic after they're all hatched.

A funny thing happened when I was checking on the mama hen. When I opened the door to the coop, all the other chickens came running to see what I was doing. The resident stray cat followed and tried to go into the coop - until the mama hen pecked the daylights out of it. It stunned the cat, so I'm betting that it won't try to bother the hen anymore. She's a fierce protector of her babies.

Six silkied Serama chicks with their surrogate mother. One is still wet and there are three eggs left. Not sure if those will hatch or not, but will leave them with the hen for a few more days to see.

Wanted to butcher Roos today, but the weather didn't cooperate. We are getting hammered with hail. So I took the 18 Roos I was going to butcher & split them up between 2 cattle panel style coops & will spend another wk fattening them up.
Coral sorry about the flood. MIL basement flooded when they had all the floods in Iowa a fee yrs ago, she is still battling the after effects. We talk about doing a basement- root cellar under our garage when we build, but I do worry about flooding & ground shifting.

Huge shocking words came from DD13-- she said POOPS was alot of fun!!! Just doesn't know why people would walk around wearing a shirt with poop on it!!!! This is from a girl who thinks nothing is fun & would live in her room with her phone & iPod & come out for food occasionally!

Ksane hope you can find good homes for your 4 legged family. Don't mention them to my DD she thinks we still need more animals for our petting zoo. Honestly we don't had good enough fencing for them. We have 2 goat pens fenced, but most of our fence is barb wire & it wouldn't keep a mini pony safe. I am sure you will find a good home for them!

Awe what cute little babies!!!! Hope your other eggs hatch as well. We go pick up this weeks hatch tonight. I can't wait to see the little fluff balls.

Okay question time. We have some black cooper marans that are now 15 weeks old. One is getting a really red comb. They have been on chick feed all this time. But I am wondering is it to early to start on layer pellets? I was going to wait until they are 20 weeks but it would be nice if I could put them in with the laying hens now so I can use that pen for babies coming up.

LOL my 14 year old son is looking forward to seeing and having a chance to buy him some chickens. But he can't keep from smirking everytime I say something about "POOPS", lol. It is the age I know, but I just love this age, girls don't have cooties but yet he still won't talk to them unless it is about computers, haha.

As of today I have officially commited mass murder again this year. All my tomato and pepper seedlings are now dead. I have such a tiny space for starting them and don't seem to have the knack, but I keep trying. Most all other seeds I start I start in the garden itself which I do much better at. I am hoping I'll get better when I have a greenhouse (hopefully by next year)
