***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Me and Gary England are going to come to blows if I missed the chicken auction for nothing.
I was supposed to pick up some Ameraucana eggs from someone and was looking forward to those. I ended up setting 24 eggs in the Eco 20, some LF Cochin/EE eggs because I'm just loving the beards, feathered legs and big bodies. I only set 4 Fav eggs. From the hen I got from Mike D last year and the Fav boy I love so much. This hen I got from Mike D is colored really good and nice and stocky. I only set her eggs, she's my girl.
Well, no rain here yet. No nothing. This Brinsea incubator ran for 24 hrs since I got it. It holds the temp perfect. I love these Brinseas, they feel solid. I'll probably hang onto the 10-egg one, too. I'd hate to have an egg emergency and no incubator to put it in.
Here's one of the 6 Ameraucanas I've got here. I love the eyes. And here's the egg parents I set eggs from hoping to get beards and feathered legs. Rebecca has eggs from the Blue/Black group due to hatch right about now, I can't wait to see what her babies look like. This could get interesting. I'm anxious to see what the Cochin/Orloff looks like. The 2 older Orloffs are the big ones and those are the eggs I set from.
Kass, good idea on learning to caponize. Maybe I should try raising one of the meat breeds (that would die early anyway) and see if taking them in for processing is something I could do. Surely someplace around here does that. Just a thought. Because I love hatching and I love the babies. And seriously-it's not like people are in the market for PET roosters. I'm just trying to be realistic.

i know lots of people in the market for pet roosters, they say they are more tender and tastier than barnyard birds!

pssst mitzi, they are only pets to you. i know, you dont want to know they are gonna be eaten.
think long and hard about meat birds, find someone that has them and go check them out. to me, they are nasty, eating, pooping machines.
i heard someone describe them as stomachs with a mouth on top and a,,,, you know what on the bottom.

That might actually be the advantage to meat birds though...maybe I'd be glad to haul them to a processor by the time they're 6 wks lol
I'd have to fence off a big area, maybe 100x100 for 50 birds-would that be big enough? The biggest problem I see is by the time you feed them for a few months and then pay someone to process them, you might as well have ran to WalMart and bought chicken. I don't want to loose $100 month just to have 'healthier' chicken to eat.

my apologise to whom ever may hav`e been offended by my earlier post.
was not meant in anyway how it was taken.

guess i need to watch how i say/type things.

I didn't read anything wrong with what you said medfordz. I enjoy your posts and look forward to them. They always make me smile!

they are saying the storms will hit eastern side about dawn-

on meat birds- i couldn't raise them, but for what its worth they really don't have the personality or intelligence of regular chickens, the one i had last year really lived only to eat and poop- she couldn't even get on a roost...

have a serama broody- poor joe, his josie is a cranky lady!

We are leaving Blanchard now. Was a small crowd & not too many birds. Think everyone was scared of the rain. Bought some guinea eggs for 10c each since we never have enough guinea eggs. Almost made it out without any birds, but DD is in the back holding her new EE roo. So yes there is a market for pet roosters! She didn't even want to put him in a cage. Can't figure out why we are taking a rooster home, but she really liked him & thinks he is so nice.
He does have a nice beard but seriously! Another rooster? I would prefer pet hens. They dont flog & crow.

Where did you hear this Robin? Looks like the severe weather passed Tulsa but is hitting Wichita and points North right now. Someone here mentioned KFOR.com. Cool site, you can watch the live shots from the storm chasers. Anyway I've been looking for current forecasts and haven't come across anything. We don't do television but sometimes it would be nice to have access to more immediate information.

This new rooster is seriously sitting in DD lap drinking out of a water bottle. We are almost home & he has sat perfectly still as she has pet him the whole way. Think he is her new favorite of the wk.

rofl!!! Great kid! See??? That's the problem I have with a few of mine-one of my poor little not-so-pretty hatchery Silkie boys will sit on my lap and lay his dang head on my shoulder and purr. He's a darling! I can't get rid of an animal that loves me so much haha!
