***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Here's the earrings for the POOPS raffle! After much procrastination of my own, I finally got these finished.

The pic is a little blurry and the lighting stinks but it gives you the idea. A lot of the paler colors and details got washed out. They're much nicer when you can see them up close. In addition to the chicken beads, I had some easter egg beads left over so I made a few of those too. I hope everybody likes them.

Cute, cute, cute! I can't wait to buy tickets for the raffle!

Nektosha - those earrings are cute! Will have to buy some raffle tickets for those, too.

GotGame - nice looking birds! Good to see you on here again.

Enjoyed the auction tonight. Didn't buy or sell anything but had a nice time visiting with the BYC folks and looking at all the birds for sale. Evidently I-44 northbound from Newcastle was a race course this evening. Barely escaped with my life! Those speed limit signs must not apply to everyone. Blinkers are optional, too, it seems.

That's my complaint for today.

I love these! They're adorable!

We had ALL the chicks outside today except for the three I hatched out since they are so tiny. Got the chicken wire finally put up! My bucks decided to go inside the coop and that chick feed was the best thing ever. I had a heck of a time keeping them out so we could get work done. Silly boys. My doeling was too cute checking everyone out. Today was a beautiful day.

Here is Sparta with his girls who are pretty much the same age but bigger than him already. I'm going to get him a girl or two later on down the road. He is so pretty I love watching him outside.

Wow, Sparta's way good looking and the others are all growing so fast! :-O
You should've been a photographer.

Matt, I love Cornish. I've got 2 Dark Cornish bantams and they're the funniest things to watch! Like little bowling balls.

I snatched up MJ's black Cochin bantam babies tonight at Newcastle. I've never seen chicks so tiny, most all my breeds are big. These guys will be sooooo easy to house and I just adore Cochins big and small. I got 4 Silver Phoenix chicks also. Another nice and small breed. The hens are supposed to be real docile and the males are just beautiful with their long long tails. Then the most gorgeous OEGB rooster.A creole color? He's got a copper colored flecked back and black and white mixed in, he's so pretty! I've got 4 OEGB hens here with no rooster because the rooster was one we lost awhile back. This tiny guy is the size of my Serama. He's so pretty. He went for $7, I couldn't believe that's all he cost. I was kicking myself so hard for not paying close enough attention when the Buff Orpington hens came out. I thought the bigger one was the cockerel so didn't bid. Come to find out that was the hen. I think Shellie got her. She was so pretty.

Edit: Evidently everything I saw and bought tonight was pretty and gorgeous judging from my unimaginative adjectives lol

Got a text from Jerry, no Blanchard auction next wk. So everyone hatching should have lots of chicks to being to poops.

We are unloaded from the Newcastle sale & just finished giving the dog his 2nd bath of the night. Evidently fresh cow manure is my dogs idea of dust bathing.

Glad I bought all those waters tonight @ Newcastle they will come on handy, during the summer i make sure we have LOTS of water available. We didn't buy any birds or eggs, but came home with a whole tray of guinea eggs for birdwalkfarm, so that helped me not buy any extra hatching eggs!

Hope everyone enjoyed the wonderful weather today! Tomorrow is going to be another day in the garden, plan on getting all the rest of my seedlings in the ground, then I can figure out if I have any space left.

Love these...You do wonderful work!! Yep, I'll be buying tickets for these too!

Matt...very nice!!
Congrats to everyone who has new chicks and had lovely purchases at NewCastle!

Spent Saturday planting 13 bare root fruit trees my SIL orderd from Stark Nursery. They were still dormant from shipping and were definitely great trees. The two little grandsons were delightful. Hubby cut a lot of dead wood from the little Blackjack "forest" in the back yard. They had set aside a nice area for a sunny garden and we took compost to add to the herb garden and for the trees. We were both sooo tired when we left Edmond.

A friend of ours was having an auction of his pecan cracking/bakery set up in Meeker. They were retiring. I had put in an absentee bid on a stainless steel rolling rack that was 4' x 18" x 6 feet tall for my new hen house along with 10 of those 18 x 24 baking sheets. Ended up winning both bids so we ran by there to pick up the items. Was told we were the only ones winning an absentee bid. They had bidders all the way from Illinois for their pecan cracking equipment. When we got there, he and his wife gave us three huge wooden shelf units that had not sold in the auction. Roger and his brother will pick those up Sunday. They will make great storage units for the barn for all Rogers stuff.

I'm going to Mary's Swap meet on Sunday to pick up those two lovely Bo Garret white Cochin hens that Michael Daugherty has been hen sitting for me for two weeks. I am so excited.

Quote: Did you start those from seed? If so, how did you do it. I have three palm seeds from my Dad's home in Florida that I want to try to start.

Yes, most I started from seed. Do you know what kind of palm they're from? Some take a lot longer to sprout than others. You can soak them over night in warm water. Then remove the outer layer, because that has something in it that keeps the seed from sprouting as fast. The hard part is the seed. I usually start them in a deep pot. Then, depending on what variety they are, will either plant where I want them, or keep them in pots till later, and re-pot to a larger one. Don't let them dry out. Most young palms don't like their roots disturbed. The ones that don't mind get planted together in a larger pot and divided later.

Those two that were killed were volunteers the birds planted, growing in the grass that I didn't know were there.I should have looked first, but didn't expect them and didn't know they were there till several weeks after I sprayed there.

The reason is, I sprayed some bermuda grass there at the end of a bed to make it longer. (The bed, not the grass) Guess I got to lazy to dig.

I think this was the mother plant to those seedlings. It puts out a lot of seeds every year. The birds always get to them before I can get them all picked.

I guess I'll have to look for more now.

If you cut the cane between each node where the little plantlets are trying to grow, you can root each one. Shove them straight down in some loose soil so where the part growing off the cane is about an inch below the soil level with the leaves facing up above ground. Water well and don't let them dry out this summer. Treat them just like you would seedlings and you'll have plenty on new plants to plant, trade or give away. Would make a great privacy fence too.

BTW, They'll root in water too. Just takes longer for them to get established when you plant them out.
Thanks Tony I'll be trying this, Would you leave the bamboo section with the node in the middle long or shorten it closer to the node? Since some nodes have starts coming out on 2 or more places around the node can you split the bamboo lengthwise to separate the different shoots? I could get lucky and have some started by POOPS this way but most likely since that's just around the corner root sections will be best.

Yes, leave as much of the cane as you can. That will give some nourishment to the plantlet till the roots get established.
