***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Well the weekend is almost at an end. Got all the coops cleaned, brooders cleaned, chicks moved to bigger brooders (at least those ready to move). Moved 8 guinea eggs to the hatcher and candled 3 1/2 dozen eggs that are on day 8, we have 9-10 that were questionable but I will give them a few more days. The others were all looking great. Not holding out to much hope on those guineas I think I only have 2 or 3 that 'might' make it. Got our hygrometer all set up in the big redwood and loving it. Set 2 dozen RIR eggs from auction, if anyone hears of Barred Rock pullets or RIR roos around 2 months old or so for sale please holler at me. I prefer heritage RIR roos not production reds but will take what I can find right now. My awesome hubby got 24 tomato plants in that we bought from the local boy scout troop. Didn't get the pepper plants in but hope he gets to those tomorrow. I am sooooooo far behind in getting my garden in this year.

Buster- I have someone supposed to be coming to pick up some red sexlink pullets, a black australorp hen and 6 3 day old black sexlink pullet chicks on Wednesday. If they don't show up I will let you know. The red sexlinks are 15 weeks old and the BA is just started laying. The others well it would be a while before you saw eggs from those, lol.

For those wondering about Buff Orphingtons, we have 14 in our grow out pen and 6 in my laying pen, we LOVE them. I have 6 more in brooders. We lost our big BO rooster this last month so raising out a few new ones. I can't say enough good about my buffs we just love them. They lay great eggs not as big as my French Cukoo Marans but more like the size of my Black Australorps still a large egg. When we add new hens to the laying coop I can count on my buff girls to welcome the new bird, now my BA's while normally laid back they are at the top of the pecking order in that pen. But then again it is just BA's, BO's and EE's in there so all laid back girls it doesn't take much to be top dog, lol.

Today I candled the eggs under all the broodies and it looks like there will be some hatches this week. Only had to toss two eggs - one had cracked somehow and was smelly! Another one just appeared to have quit. One has already pipped so I hope to see a new face in the morning. One of the broody hens has decided she's tired of sitting and is hanging out with the boys now. Poor girl. She doesn't stand a chance at having many feathers on her head.

like i said, lots and lots of phone numbers!

i do have a book that i right things down in, just have a hard time reading what i wrote.

Well, you still got it going on then. At least you can remember where you put your book!

candled some eggs tonite, 2 doing well under the cochin broody, the ee broody had one broke, and another is AWOL, weird- so 3 are hopefully doing well, need to get her moved for the safety of the eggs. Got some more pics of the crossbeak-

i'll do what i can to help her- any suggestions are appreciated...:) i was wondering if working it gently back where it belongs would strenthen the jaw muscles to keep it even?

would anyone be interested in silky cochin crosses??

Thank you to all the bycers for the.hooded chicken towels cards and money for lily we are truly blessed to have you all as friends. hope you guys enjoyed some of the changes we made. hope everyone has a great week

Very good looking additions to the cochin flock NanaKat.. You will should be very happy with the birds from Bo. He does a great job with them.
Thank you. Even though Bo said they were rooster worn, they cleaned up and fluffed up nicely. They will look much better when they go thru the next molt. There are a few broken feathers under all that fluff. The girls are in quarantine now and will be fun to introduce them to Delilah and Samson. The Iowa babies are getting much bigger and those three from Delilah and Samson are just too cute. We will definitely have a well rounded Cochin flock.

There's so many Wyandottes & Orpingtons around and I've never had one (or met one except at auctions). Do they have similar personalites?

I really love the Wyandottes! They are really sweet tempered birds and nice consistant layers. Adding and a great broodie!

Just get your auctioneer a portable mike and have your guys still hold the stuff up while in the back of the barn (it was hard to see over the crowd a couple times) and it would be perfect!

We are rejoicing this morning over a 1st time heifer and her new huge bull calf. We had to take her to the vet yesterday about 6:30 pm after she went into labor and began having difficulty. Our rule has always been to allow one hour from the time we first see feet before we intervene. If no progress has been made, we assist. It was very obvious that she had a big calf by the size of those feet and ankles.

After an hour, instead of assisting and chance losing the calf and/or the cow, we called and took her in. We have the equipment, but not the strength to pull at our age and would have had to take her in anyway. The calf was a whopper and of course had to be pulled which means chains around the front feet to pull and then chains around the back feet to hang it to drain the amniotic fluids...that makes for some tender feet that are hard to stand on. Momma had some bleeding and weakness in the hips herself. Vet said this was the first live calf pulled this month because we got her there early enough. Too many people wait too long because they don't want to pay the money...

We got them home and she immediately went to cleaning and urging the calf. We had to tube with artificial colustrum at 10:30 pm since it couldn't get up. This helped it make it thru the night.
This morning, we were prepared to milk her out, and work with the calf to keep him up. Momma cow has been encouraging the calf and the baby is up on it's own and attempting to feed.
A first time momma is difficult to work with some times since they have no experience, but Mother Nature is stronger. She will let the calf nurse here in a bit.

x2, we loved it!

Nana, congrats on the new calf, sounds like he will do just fine once he gets up and going. Those cochin girls are beautiful! We have to settle for banty cochins since we don't have enough pens for the big girls but love their gentle attitudes.
