***OKIES in the BYC III ***

My Dark Brahma girls are so adorable, they remind me of Ostriches because their legs are so thick and long. I'm really liking this breed a lot. They had a growth spurt last week all of a sudden, they'll be 5 wks Wednesday.

Hello Okies,
Wasn't able to get to the computer yesterday and had a lot of pages to read! There have been so many beautiful bird pics! It is so hard to see all these awesome Bantams and not want some! Nana, Congrats on the new calf. I understand people wanting to avoid a vet bill but it is sad this was the vets first live pull this year. In my thinking it would be more of a loss to loose the calf and maybe the cow compared to a vet bill.

I had sooo much fun at Newcastle!!! I loved meeting you all and can't wait for the next auction. Mitzi, I actually bought the little 2 mo old buff orp roo. I bid on the hen but didn't get her. I am kicking myself for giving up and not going higher. I REALLY wanted that monster orpington roo!! I was bidding but hubby started having a panic attack about not having a cage to put him for the ride home. I told him later I could have wrapped him in HIS coat! LOL Hubby is still in doghouse for at least a few more days.

BTW I know breeding is a big part of it but how do they get those exhibition orps so BIG? By comparison I am growing midget chickens.

My MIL bought 30 button quail eggs and we have them in the incubator now. She fell in love with the Coronation Sussex roo and was bidding like crazy. I was asking her what she was doing since we did not have any Sussex hens!! She has now decided she wants some of those birds, so I guess I am looking for those now too. BTW all the birds she wants are at my house and become my birds LOL. MIL is one of the major enablers in my life.

Then when my Dad heard about the new members of the flock he said he would start building new pens for when they come out of quarantine. Boy I love the enablers in my life! LOL

My new little Brahma chicks are getting shipped this afternoon from Texas and will be ready for pick up tomorrow in Norman!! I am so excited. I have some Buff Laced, Gold laced and Blue Laced Red coming in this batch and some Swedish Flower Hen chicks. I am going crazy waiting for them. I will try to post pics when they get here.

Well I gotta get back to moving birds around and putting the quarantine birds in playpens for the day. I will be back to play on BYC later! *See* everyone soon

Forgot to add a question for the quail people here,

How do I care for the baby button quail? OR the adults for that matter? I don't have quail and it looks like these will hatch out smaller than cotton balls! Luckily I have small wire cages that I had finches in. Could I put them in my aviary? It is rather big and I am also building an outside aviary. There are finches and parakeets in there now. I am adding diamond doves soon. Will they get along with the others? I believe button quail are more of a pet quail am I right?

Well everyone is getting a feast today, but I still haven't made it to the garden. I got a whole chicken the other day and have it seasoned and resting for beer butt chicken later today (Gary's feast) I seasoned it w/ a new seasoning orange/ginger/garlic/rosemary, I had to do something w/ the innards (neither Gary nor I eat them) so I cooked them w/ some eggs for the dogs, I had some stale cereal that Gary won't eat so mixed it w/ more eggs and radish greens from the garden it will be a big serving of scrambled eggs for the girls, oh I didn't forget the babies, they got dubias. I am going to boil some eggs for deviled eggs, and a new batch of pickled eggs so the babies will probably get some of those eggs. (when I scramble them for the adults I uses shells and all that is why the babies didn't get any of those, but the boiled eggs will be easy to sneak a few out for them w/o any shells.)

Shellie so glad y'all enjoyed the auction! Auctions are a great way to find all the poultry & related items you never knew you needed!

Nana so glad you were able to get the calf & momma through the rough delivery. Neighbor had one a few wks back. Calf was so big dislocated the hips of mom will birthing & the calf died. Took wks to get the heifer back up & going. They were having to lift her with the tractor just so she could eat & drink. Cattle are too much for me! Have to keep saying that, everytime I see calves running across the pasture I fall in love. Good thing we are surrounding by cattle pasture. I can just enjoy them & not have to care for them!

Kass I plant my garlic in the fall as well. Never has thrived if I planted it in the spring. This yrs garlic seems to be my best ever. Had an 8x8 grow out pen sitting in the same spot for 2 months. Moved the chicks & the pen. A month latter planted the garlic. Haven't had a single weed & the garlic looks amazing.

Today I have done nothing except check on the animals & collect eggs. Think I will work on cleaning the office desk & maybe thinking about our menu for the wk. DH's class graduates Friday so for 8 wks he should be home almost every night, instead of 2-3 times a wk. I have to get back into cooking each night. I am married to a guy that can fix almost anything, except when he cooks. His cooking skills are limited to peanut butter & jelly or a ham sandwich.

Is it to late to plant garlic? I found a great sale on them so I got 12 now I am trying to decide whether to plant them or try and preserve them in oil.

You can set your bigger cloves of garlic. When they send up scapes, cut off the scapes so the plant gets the growth energy back to the bulb. The harvest will be in the fall so you may get a few bulbs from them. I let mine completely go dormant and dig with a potatoe fork.

I can sympathize w/ the non cooking husband I have one of those too. He is the baby child of his family that is what I blame it on, the "babies" are sooooo babied! (yes I am the oldest in my family so there may be some unresolved childhood issues

)
