I saw it and an eyebrow raised, but I didn't comment, trying to do my part in keeping him out of trouble. (It takes a village and all... lol lol )

Tomorrow is going to be a big garden weeding day. I still have a couple of things I want to plant too, not many though. I also need to harvest my rat tail radish, it is going to town on me.

mjgigax and poultryandbees: I didn't think we'd be getting significant amounts of eggs out of the chickens we got from you guys, but I got eight eggs out of one of the cochins and the silkie this week. The other cochin is brooding eggs so she doesn't count. :D At this rate they're outlaying my Dominiques.

Great pictures of the gardens and birds. Tomaotes are not far off, am so looking foreward to fresh tomatoes from the garden, picked 2 great big cabbages this weekend, and beets, lots of beets, and lots of apricots. squash hopefuly this coming weekend to.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I lost LF Lavender Cochins last fall due to my neighbors dogs so I hot wired my pen. Ran a line about 8" off the ground and another one abut 12" above that one so if anything tried to climb it would get bit.

I am going to get a LF Black Roo to put with my Splash girls and see what colors I get out of them. I am hopping to get some Blue's and Lav's. What colors do you have?
I've been thinking about the hotwire thing, myself. This is the first time I've had a problem with any kind of predator, but I'm afraid that now whatever it was has found the gravy train, it's not going to go away. I need to have a long talk with my outside dogs about their patrol schedule at night!

Well, right now, the only mature LF cochins I have are a white roo and buff hen, but I have a young pair of reds, I think 3 blue splash, several blues, and one black left. I found a few chicks yesterday that I think are going to be partridge, so I scooped them up. I do have one youngster that I bought as a blue, but it looks more lavender to me.

hey okie, do you have a dog you can let run at nite? that has solved alot of our predator problems-

dawned on me this morning i can block access for the chicks that will be hatching from going outside in the run, and the mamas can still go in and out- gosh i can so complicate things!!

We actually have two dogs that stay outside and they do a good job of keeping predators away. This is the first time ever I've had a problem. Thinking about it, we do have feral barn cats and I'm kind of wondering if one of those might be the culprit. The dogs don't bother them because the cats live here and have been around forever, and it would have had to be something that size or smaller to have gotten in to where the chicks were. All I know for certain is that whatever it was, I am NOT a fan!

A electric fence in addition to the 5 foot fencing that was in place has ended the predator problem here, the cats sure don't like the electric fencing either, have not seen any of them in the yards. The chickens and turkeys learn fast not to stick their heads through the fence to eat.
And bubba the calf only tried licking the electric fence a couple of times himself !, he tries to eat everything, so far he has disconnected the landline phone, tore the outside vent off from the dryer, eats all the chick grower he can find, rearranges the hay in the nest boxes, eats the leafs off of the vegetable plants he can reach through the garden fencing, chewed on a hat or two. Just like having a little kid at times, he is not as cute as he wa when we 1st got him, so i am thinking that it will not be that hard to put him in the freezer later. Did get the knuckled foot straightened out mostly though. He stands at the back door and bawls if the door is open, still wants a bottle, or wants to be petted.
