I tried real hard to resist. For like, five whole minutes!

KSANE: Yes it was a two month surprize in the making... Just when the kids begin to lose hope that we wont have chicks this spring... MOM (and Dad:even though deployed) DELIVERS .... They are so thrilled... already "sissy" tags hers... Son wants to wait until the personalities shine forth before he picks his favorites..

I think that's just wonderful. Little does your son know that favorites pick US, not the other way around lol!
Your daughter's is darling in that picture.

Theys probable lots of folks on this here BYC that have absolutly no use or like for me as I look at chickens in a differant light than most on here. BUT one thing I have learned thru the years hanging out with the chicken folk I have hung out with is it is survivale of the fittest, anything less is problems. Way to many people that dont know anything about chickens and meds go to pumping meds down their chickens at every sign of problems. LESS meds and MORE culling. Allow only the healthy birds to live and reproduce, anything less is problems. It is harsh I know, but in the end it is far better for the chicken world.

It's taken me a while to finally learn that lesson too. I would spin my wheels trying to save a chick that would die anyway. Now, I've learned to distinguish what can be helped or avoided and what can't.
Culling has gotten easier and my flock is healthier for it.

Spent today getting canning jars properly stored for canning season and cleaning out the hot tub room so I can begin to use it for my pottery studio and to enjoy the hot tub more.

Then moved the 3 week old LF chicks to the floor with the broodie moms and the 24 already there. One of the Blue Garrett Cochin babies took on a 5 week old....drew himself up to full height and chest bumped..hard. Must be a little roo. Surprisingly at three weeks old, he is already as big as the 5 week old. The broodies immediately took them in stride and protected them from my hand.
I need to clean out a floor pen so the older little banties can go to the floor now too. Those d'Anvers are growing like weeds!

Bought an older 10 unit nest box yesterday from a man in McLoud. It was in good shape mostly. I've scrubbed it down and disinfected it. I'm changing out the roost boards andneed to pop rivet one corner. I'll add a coat of paint and it wil be ready to hang. Just have to decide where. I think I will hang this one lower so the cochins don't have to jump up to get to a nest....or I'll have to get them a step ladder
