***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Theys probable lots of folks on this here BYC that have absolutly no use or like for me as I look at chickens in a differant light than most on here. BUT one thing I have learned thru the years hanging out with the chicken folk I have hung out with is it is survivale of the fittest, anything less is problems. Way to many people that dont know anything about chickens and meds go to pumping meds down their chickens at every sign of problems. LESS meds and MORE culling. Allow only the healthy birds to live and reproduce, anything less is problems. It is harsh I know, but in the end it is far better for the chicken world.
I tend to agree with you. If you would have asked me 6 months ago I would have a different answer. When I had that eye gunk that made them basically blind I tried to save the first one. By the time the 5th one came up with it I culled right away. The birds were suffering, I was spending money on medicine and I don't think they would have ever gotten better. They may have infected my other chickens. I think they were born with it. It affected every one of my Barred Rocks from that batch plus an older one I got from the same source. Oddly the RIR I got at the same time, from the same source was fine and still is. I would rather cull then baby the bird then have a weak chicken that might make the others sick. It is not easy for this ex city girl to cull, but in some cases it is best.

Same here we do have Denegard on hand for illness should it break out after our little dealings with the resp. stuff but in the end with the batch of chicks I got that had it we had to cull the whole lot of them. Everything in that pen was culled sick or not. I then worried about the pens next to them and oxined everything down for a long time afterwards to try to keep it from spreading. Now I am really glad we have dividers between that grow out pen and the ones next to it (stockade fencing). Wish we had built them all that way now.

We got 1/4 of the tomatoes staked. DH & kids went fishing this AM & promised to be home early enough so we didn't have to work in the heat. They lied. Weren't home until lunch so it was almost 2 before my garden help was ready to work. Now they are all tuckered out already!

Started ordering curriculum stuff for the girls-- we debated back & forth on trying another local school that has better reviews. But there graduating class was only 11 this yr-- doesnt make me feel too excited about sending the girls there. I missed homeschooling & my girls hate to admit it but they also missed parts of being homeschooled.

Next few days are suppose to be HOT. Make sure your birds have plenty of water!

Okay one curriculum junkie to another what did you order? LOL I still need to order Math U See for next year, and the get the list from the coop we will use for history and figure out what they will need for that. For Kurt I keep wavering we have been using MUS for math but I am thinking of trying Teaching Textbooks but not 100%. Sure wish I had gone to the convention this year to see it hands on.

I am flailing around trying to figure out what to do for homeschooling. I actually thought about sending them to school, but the one in our district is HORRIBLE. I mean, really, really horrible. We live closer to Oakdale in Edmond, but of course, they're a closed district. I called about five schools today that had acceptable reviews, but only one of them is even saying that they might consider accepting transfer students IF they don't fill up in regular enrollment in July. We have been doing mostly unstructured things since both my boys are young, but I wanted to at least move in a more structured direction. Going nuts trying to figure it out.

I am pretty much the same way.

Cathy I am sad I missed the convention as well!!
Both girls are on the same level in many areas, I don't have everything ordered yet..... But got my list narrowed down some things I am shopping for used other resale is so high or hard to find that I order new.
We will use the Bible experience -- We will listen to a part everyday & the girls have the bibles to go with the listening -- we will make notes & questions & discuss. No real curriculum just studying the Bible
We will do homeschool band A- flute T- clarinet
Math is going to be chalk dust algebra
Science - apologia biology
Spelling- power spelling
Grammar-- I am thinking Abeka- boring but produces good results-- if the kids protest too much it will be BJU. But in 3rd grade Alexis was testing on 12th grade grammar with Abeka
History-- maybe sonlight-- it's my favorite - I enjoy reading the books with the girls, if not it will be BJU
Literature- sonlight or Abeka
Yes sonlight is suppose to be an all on one curriculum but I do think the kids need some more "structured" parts of their curriculum since we hope to get them to college.
Imagine we will do sewing as well- doubt we will do formal lessons this yr, unless we can do the lessons on the same day as band. I can teach A sewing well but T has multiple melt downs & she pushes my buttons when I try to teach her how to sew!!! She is older now hopefully she will do better, and not give up as easy.
I do like MUS but I havent looked into using it for highschool. I just want to make sure the girls will score will on ACT-- SAT

DH doesn't question curriculum to much any more. He usually just wants to know how much it will cost him.

Look for a co-op. We joined one in Choctaw last year and it was so much fun. We have done a different one in Del City for 2 years now but now that the one in choctaw is closer that is where we will go. The kids love the classes. What ages are your boys? My younger two are 7 and 10, will be 3rd and 4th grade next year. If you live in Edmond maybe we could get together some time.
