Went to OKC swapmeet this weekend for 2day's an Blanch sale sat night , Just wontd to say bird's are geting cheaper with the heat ex.egg's an chick's peep can only buy so manny an with all the auction's going on an ther's not that manny peep buying thim now..So it dont matter wer you take thim ! THey are only going to get cheeper... I no some folk's did not like the prise's at the sale ,, One lady said she had payd 10 to 15 buck's a doz for hatching egg's an the chick's didnt even bring 50cent's each ..I told her that is the way it go's every yr..Bird's will go down tel fall wen it start's to cool off thin the prise will go back up ...So peep dont get mad at the folk's puting on the sale ..Wer ever it is you take thim ..I have lern a long time ago it's not about the money you make off of your bird's but the fun you have hatching an breeding an saling thim ..An all the good folk's you meet a long the way...

Well said Mike. It did seem prices dropped earlier this yr than last, but think everyone is scared since last yr was so brutal. We already stopped setting any guinea eggs from the free range flock & are only setting the fancy colors. Figure we will set eggs 4 more wks & that is only to get specific colors we want or that others have asked for.

Carl sounds like the pheasant eggs did better for you, think we had about a 50% hatch. Imagine We would have had a better hatch in the brinsea but it was loaded with other eggs. Just wait until you hear how load those pheasants are! We have them in the living room since they are so tiny & they sing to us all night. Think the same one is always making the fuss. First few days I kept thinking something was wrong them I decided they are just noisier than guineas.
Wish I could get a cabinet incubator that hatches as well as my Eco!

Amen Micheal.. wait till you have $20 an egg tied up and over half are infertile.. I have a hatch coming up that will cost me at present 42 a chick if all the fertile eggs hatch. Not likely to see any return if I was to sell the offspring.

Very well said Micheal!!! Did you see the pic of my Spangled Toppy Roo and the Spangled Toppy Hen I got from Monty? I love them, going to try and raise out some. Have you heard from yur buddy that bought my stags at Poops, hope he liked them. I have 5 broodies going now and three more thinking about it!!! Wife says we have to many chickens now!!! I glad she loves me and she is a trooper, she gets out there gets stuff done, I couldn't do it with out her!! How did you come through all the wind and tornadoes a while back Micheal??? I get great hatches but have no ability to adjust the temp just the humidity. The Pheasants belong to P&B I will just have to house them in the brooders outside till she gets back, then she can them and the turkeys and guineas all at the same time. Waiting to see if she wants more Honeysuckle there is so much here I really need to thin it some too. So if anyone wants some just hollar.

Hey Carl I have a question! As you know I raise large size Old English Games and I have a few Brown red hens, now if I take those hens and put them under a Blue Breasted Golden Duckwing cock will I get some Silver Blues out of them??? I know there is a difference in the Duckwing and Crow wing but will it affect this cross? I so want some Silver Blues in the large size!!!! I also have a Silver duckwing, should I use him instead? Lynn

Mitzi - I know what you mean, when I rescued I was out tons of money and no one ever wanted to give me what I had in them. I wasn't a registered charity, it's not like I got donations, so I was just out the money to try and find them homes. What really frustrated me was sometimes you were lucky to just give some of them away because they weren't a desireable breed. I was lucky that most were very good dogs, I only had one out of the 40ish dogs that I placed that was a problem dog. Now I have problem dog number two and not only is he a problem, but disabled too, so double wammy. ergh.

So my silkie roo is mean in the mornings. He beats up on the girls and refuses to let my silkie hen come outside in the mornings. What's up with that? And shes not laying eggs.

People's biggest mistake in any hobby is going into it thinking they're going to make money. It's not going to happen with any animal.

Carl said I should show you these photos for your viewing pleasure...pullet offspring from Carl's line of CW that are now in my flock. Here is Beau with the 3 CW hens and the 2 pullets. The Blue hen is a hatchery girl that is the mom of the Blue CW line I'm working on.

And just for everyone else...here is the F1 example of the Blue CW that is now 4 months old. She is developing nicely and has several younger sisters still in the floor pen. So I'm pretty excited about these.



And my mentor Carl said this would be the best project roo for the F1 pen for the Cochin Wyandotte cross I'm working on. Will cross him back on his sisters to see what varieties we get...Birchen, CW, Silver Blue, and Blue Columbian both in clean leg and feather leg....should be some interesting developments. If I'm lucky, Carl will take on the genetics since I'm really fuzzy there. I have knowledge on Lovebirds, but their color specs are different from poultry.




The blue girl on the right is a definite pen mate Cochin Wyandotte cross. The black Cochin Wyandotte with the Birchen necks may also go in that pen


Already planning ahead. Roger said ."You will have to have a pen for each variety to keep the eggs separate." I think he is won over! Little does he know there are already 7 separate enclosures available.. and he helped build them..... mawahahahahaaaaaa

The cross will be a mess for several generations and difficult to straighten out but can be done most likely 7-8 generations to get right. You will see some pattern and stippling in both sexes of the offspring in at least the first three generations, as well as leg color problems, eye color problems, the appearance of wing bay in males, poor hackle striping in males.
But if you want to try here is what I would do if that were my only option..
Use the Silver Duckwing male over the Brown Red females. Hatch no more than 12 F1 (first Cross) use 1 cockrell from that mating over 5-6 females from the mating.
When you mate the F1 birds select for solid black chick down, cull all the others, and hatch a lot.
When they begin to mature look for solid black legs or at least as dark as possible, select against anything with stippling or pattern appearance if possible. Use the best cockrell and 5-6 pullets from the F2 mating. Get rid of the F1 birds.
Take the best F2 male and go bck to the Brown Red females, keep the pullets and two cockrells the cockrells will be golden but will throw both Birchen and Brown Red Pullets.
Pen 1. Third genetaion Back cross golden male over Brown Red: Take a Golden Cockrell go back the Brwon Red again in one pen, keep the Bicrhen Pullets.
Pen 2 Third Generation Back cross golden male x 3 generation Birchen Pullets.

Fourth Generation
Birchen Cockrell from Pen 2 over Pullets from Pen 1. , this will be the fifth generation and likely breed relatively true with little pattern continueing to appear.

Morning glory vine to shade the girls, sorry this pic isn't very good, hoping for some better ones when I have more flowers to chose from. Where I have these planted is a challange to get a good angle for a pic.



I planted several varieties of beans this year, and I'm not sure which one this one is, but the blossoms I thought were outstanding. The dragon tongue beans also have a very pretty blossom.
