***OKIES in the BYC III ***

We got a nice shower this afternoon..almost a 1/2 inch. Sure cooler...didn't have to turn on the swamp cooler for the hens.
Planted cantalope and more squash after clearing a bed. The fall potatoes are sticking up little leaves. The corn is tasseled and silked and looks good. Got to weed and gave the chickens the cabbage leaves and spinach pulled from the cleared bed. They went nuts as usual over the greens.
Found three eggs on the floor of the hen house...all three Cochin hens are laying so I put in a floor box. I've checked the white hens eggs and they are fertile so Samson is doing his duty.

Love the coop Kass.

Cute chick pics

Quote: It was suggested a raccoon will sometimes eat the shells. I think that would probably be it. After all, they eat chicken bones.

Chickens, ducks and 2 turkeys were setting as well, in nests that were raided. One turkey was so determined to set, after the first time she took over another nest and was raided again a few nights later. Finding a duck nest, she started setting on that next. Three strikes you're out. This time something killed her. Nothing left but a trail of feathers.

That's what makes me think coon. They can climb better than a cat. To many hidden nests in to many locations for a 2 legged varmint. This is all inside a large 7 1/2 foot high fenced in 6 acre yard with very noisy gates.
Besides, people around here know I shoot first and ask questions later.

I'm going to be able to go now too. I'm bringing some black ameraucanas and some blue ameraucanas (NPIP flock) and whatever else I see that I can live without. I do have a pair of wheaten ameraucanas only if someone PM's before hand to bring them. These are all young birds, 3 months old.

Look forward to seeing you'all there!

Traci, Mike had a frizzled guinea at his place once, but none of my flock is frizzled. You guineas will be in an ugly stage for a few months, then one day you will walk outside & they will look like guineas. Or if you ask the nieghbors boy, they look like dinosaurs. Also, Thursday another buff cochin egg hatched, I was getting ready to toss it & it started chirping! guess your hen started sitting on the other eggs & this egg got snuck in a few days later. I will have to post some pics next wk when I get home. Cathie how is your mom doing? I am exhuasted & heading to bed early, have to be up at day break. good night all!
Wow! Glad it hatched. So, tell me, the cochin eggs are the rounded ones, right? Not the bullet shaped ones?

Well, somehow the screen I have across the top of my brooder on the back porch got knocked off. All my feathered in chicks have made a break for the backyard! It's hilarious to watch them darting around. They seem to be especially fond of the muddy patches. LOL
