Cathie, I'm so sorry about your mom. This must be a very hard time for you and your family to be dealing with this on top of fireworks season starting.
Congrats, Robin. When you're rich and famous don't forget all us little folks :-D
The little one I had with the bum leg seems to get around (awkwardly) with just his one leg so I haven't done anything with it. I don't think it's a vitamin deficiency or anything like that, I think it falls under the heading of "Stuff That Happens". The Black Silkie babies! They make me want some so bad! The Blue Partridge girl I got from Betsey has a vaulted skull, my others don't. So I don't think there's any real difference except in how it looks. She's always been extra big and strong and healthy (knocking on wood).
I pulled 1 Guinea baby out from under the Marans hen that hatched, there's a bunch more pipped but she was flatted out like a fat pancake over them and it was hard to crawl where she's at to check them all. I really thought they'd hatch faster than chicks. The Orloff/Marans mix that my daughter wanted to let hatch did hatch yesterday, too. Who'd have thought it'd have fat puffy cheeks and feathered legs and be so big?? OMG it's adorable!
There's only a few of my 16 Araucana eggs that are growing but 14 of 18 of the Brown Red (& 4 White) Ameraucanas are doing great. I know fertility and hatching is tough with Araucana. The 2 little hatchery Porcelaine D'Uccles & the Gold Laced Sebright I got from the feed store are doing 10 times better than the group of chicks I'd gotten last time from the auction. I lost most all of the auction chicks, they didn't do well from the start. It's mentally defeating to lose so many chicks. I've had such good luck with the ones I've hatched myself (& Carl has hatched for me) and raised that it makes me even more determined not to get any more birds from elsewhere, period, whether adults or chicks. The 2 little Buff Orps from Bill are in with my 4 Silver Laced & 2 Gold Laced Cochins and that group is doing wonderful. Everyone I raised this year gets their OWN yard & never gets mixed with anyone they didn't grow up with. That's worked real well so far this year and I'm going to keep doing it that way.
These 4 Dark Brahma girls are awesome! Big boned and so laid back, I love this breed!
