***OKIES in the BYC III ***

need pics!!!~ they are lucky you gave them some tlc!!
Hi Okie guys and gals! I finally grabbed a moment to post. Had a good time at Newcastle. I didn't go down and talk to anyone at the tables, I always get so shy just going up and starting a conversation! LOL. I did get some nice birds tho!!! Of course I think my hubby would have preferred it if I had found someone to talk to instead of bidding. I do have a confession to make, I committed the auction newbie sin of buying some birds without looking at them.

Yep I sure did. Well you see Scoots put some chicks up on the table and said they were cochins, I think "hmmm I was thinking about some cochins", then the bidding is really low and before I know it they were mine. Oops! Hubby goes and picks them up. when he hands me the carrier my words were OMG! What are they!! I am sad to say there was a little French involved in that statement!

In the carrier were five of the ugliest chicks I had ever seen! They were caked in I don't know what but I call it 'ick", were mainly bald, and three were frizzle. They were pitiful. I let them rest in a quarantine cage till yesterday evening and then brought them in and started cleaning them up. Yeah I know I could have just cut my major loss of $3 total but I just couldn't do it.

After having to soak them for 30min to get all the gunk off,

I blow dried them and put them under a heat lamp. Still don't know most of their colors (some strange combos) but they look happier at least. After bathing they decided that the food and water actually looked decent to eat. I will start them on the hooch today. (that's what we call the fermented food LOL) So now Oogly, Quasi, Frankie (as in frankenstein ) Igor, and Boneapart are taking up residence in the back bedroom till they are more stable to go to an outside brooder. Ummm anyone want a frizzle cochin?

BTW is there such a thing as a tan barred? That is what one of them looks like.

Don't worry I learned my lesson! At least they seem healthy and did not have any bugs on them. Believe me I checked real good.

Christina, yikes! That must've scared you having Josh go to the hospital. Congrats to you and the kids for getting the job done anyway. Roofing is NOT something fun to pass the day. I only use TapATalk with my with my iPad for the most part. I updated it a month or so ago, it seems to work fine except it takes the long way around everything, drives me nuts to have to click through 3 or 4 places to get to the posts.
Welcome back, Joe! Still don't think it was fair but it's not like they care what I think ;-)
Haha, Shellie-you sound just like me at the auctions. The thought of approaching a group of laughing joking people who all act like they know each other is way too daunting for me. So I always sit off to the sidelines. I'd have also felt sorry for those chicks you accidently got. I learned my lesson though, too. The Spitz chicks I got at Newcastle a few months back were sick sick sick and nothing but bones. I didn't check them out before the auction or I'd have never gotten them, they all died. Thank God I had them separated from everyone else. They were covered in some kind of manaure and were in really bad shape. I know it's an auction and people want to unload birds they don't want but jeez....that's not being a decent human being to sell sick chicks IMO. Just one more reason in a long list of many that I'm determined not to bring in any more birds from outside. I'm hatching eggs and that's it.

that is really been an eye opener for me too, after having a bird shipped in, he died, then lost 5 more- not sure if that was the cause, but it seems awfully coincidental...:/

was a crazy weekend but good. moms birthday went over well. nothing fancy just a bomb fire roasted marshmellows with kids and got a bit further on her coop. Then sunday was family day. Now bout time to go out and scoop some poop. an what ever other chores i have time to do. Getting closer to muskoge and im way excited. Hubby has some time off this week and he is gonna help me finish sarama cottage. Love doing projects with him.

Taking break from making hominy....it's on it's second boil.
Takes time but worth the effort because I don't like the taste of tin can with my hominy.
The first steps are tedious, but the cleaning boils are easy.
Then will can it after the 5th cleaning boil and the final plump boil.

Going back to catch up on posts.

Did you take before and after pictures? They will probably become some of your favorites because they will turn their personalities on to impress you.

Ooh I forget to tell that the quail eggs I got from Bfrancis hatched!! All kinds of them! And all on the same day. Button and Coturnix! they were every where. Here are some pics of the babies!
that green thing is top off a small water bottle! These guys are tiny.
one of the Coturnix.
I just LOVE the eyebrows on this one!!

I really love these little guys, Thank you Bill!

You're welcome! Many more eggs where those came from...(and adults all colors June 16th at NEOCS in Muskogee)

With the buttons, you might consider an old tea towel or some terry clothe towel for the bottom of your brooder. It's been my bad experience, that even on the pine pellets (my brooder bedding of choice) can cause splay legs with the little quail. I don't move mine to pine pellets for at least 2 weeks.

so that's the little guy you were talking about at the auction?

The top coturnix will look like the one on the left when an adult:

That color is called "Manchurian" (The one on the right is called "Italian")

The little guy with eye brows you like will look something like the one on the right:

The one on the right is a "Red or Scarlet Tuxedo" (The one on the left is a "Tibetan Tux")

We Dakota and I went out this morning while it was cool, and got 4 hens that are broody and put them up in nest buckets with eggs I wanted to set, we set them aside while we moved roosters and hens around to new pens and matings, heard on one of the hen fussing in a bucket and went to check her and she had gotten too hot and had died, she was one of my best Dom Game hens of course, we checked all the rests of the buckets and they were fine so we set them aside in good shade and cleaned out broody carriers( I use big dog carriers to brood out my hens so the chicks don't get out and the cats get them). Got all of them cleaned and moved all the new broodies in, I have 7 hens on nest as of today and may have one or two trying to go broody!!! Well anyways if the matings I set up work out, I will have some nice pens set up for some fall hatching. Is there anyone on the forum that has Leghorns in the large size that are any other color than white and light brown, I am wanting some LF buff, red or silver Leghorns if you see any, please let me know where I can find them. Thanks and have a great day all, Lynn
