been busy finishing up some art for the booth, and gritting my teeth needing to bring some of the little ones... and the little lame guy is getting around better with his hock taped...

Be sure to check how tight the tape is and change it if needed every couple of days. You don't want to cause nerve damage.

I am doing a demo for raising feeder insects and had thought about a start up of dubias for the raffle that anyone could use as a start up (adult breeding pairs in the colony) or just feed out if they didn't want to start their own colony. But wasn't sure how that would go over.

I may consider the photography thing for next time, I've never been to a chicken event and don't want to tie myself down any further then the demo so I am free to roam and take it all in, besides I have to beat Ksane to banjoes table!!!!!!!

Oooh! I'd buy a raffle ticket for a starter of big ol' bugs.

Hey Joe are you going to have chicks at the meetup this month?

Boy I am envious of all the garden stuff you all are getting! With our dry spring and late frost everything is late here. My tomatoes are just starting to bloom. Will get our first squash in a couple of days. Picked a mess of green peas today.

Caught the biggest,uglyest oposumm last night. He was mangey,huge and his head was shaped like a dog! I'm surprised I haven't been looseing lots of stuff to him.
Well my wife got an offer of a job today. Just has to agree and she starts next week. Only problem is its about two hours away. She will have to stay over there ,I really don't want her on the roads that much. Not for sure how we will work it out but will have to wait a while qand make sure its something she wants to stay with before we try and either sell out or rent and move over there. Right now we are just excited she has a job again!

Barely over a week till the meetup. Sure hope Everything works as planned so I get to go!

Going back to read posts with coffee but wanted to post my brag:
Yesterday morning Roger and I went to our 160 in Prague and picked sand plums again. This time we also went to the west side where we hadn't picked last time.
This is today's juice and there are 2.5 gallons of plums laying in trays to finish ripening to make more juice. But what was interesting is a mutant sport plum...it was actually a nice bright yellow plum that when ripe had just a hint of gold. Made a pretty colored juice and this thicket was so clean (no worms or bugs) that I was able to run them thru the ricer for a jel-jam. They had a slightly different flavor than the usual red sand plum. When plums are ripe, we pick and make juice so I can make jelly over several years. This is a good year for plums. I still have 5 quarts from 3 years ago to make up first.

UGH I am going to be insane, I talked to a nice gentleman at a local auction 3 weeks ago. He swore he raised RIR and Barred Rock and he had 4 dozen hatching eggs of each. Soooo we bid on them, got them cheap enough so got 2 dozen of each. He just went on and on how his birds are all kept seperate and he marks the eggs as he pulls them from the pens, yada, yada, yada. Well 3 weeks later my hatch has started. I had no choice but to open the hatcher this morning this little guy was running loose in the bottom. Guess he somehow got out of the tray he hatched in. So opened it quickly and the only egg hatched is a RIR. Well I am no expert but I am going out on a limb here and saying this isn't no RIR, he is blue and has feather legs and feathers on 2 toes on each foot. He is cute and I have no idea what he is (taking guesses if anyone knows) but he isn't the RIR I thought I was going to get. I sure hope this one is a fluke and I get my RIR and BR or I will be giving up till fall.

Oh wow our sand plums are just now getting ripe enought to pick, we hope to make that a project for Friday! I never thought about canning the juice to make jelly later I usually stress over getting it made before we go to the fireworks stand. I can't wait to see if our dewberries are ready to pick yet.

Did the seller talk about any other breeds that he raises? From your description of the seller, I'm inclined to think he was telling you the truth about his egg-handling practices.

I wonder if a child swapped some of the eggs from one carton to another before the auction began. I've been the meanie head a few times at auctions telling kids not to pick up baby chicks and not to handle hatching eggs. I had a parent rip into me for telling his son not to kick a box of baby chicks. He said, "Don't you tell my kid what to do. Those chicks aren't yours, so you have no business telling my kid to get away from the box." I wore my best teacher face and said I'd describe them both, father and son, to the auctioneer and his staff, if he didn't take his son away from the area where the baby chicks were being kept. They left, but later, when I was on the bleachers, half a Coke somehow magically spilled itself all over my jacket, which was folded on the seat beside me.

Long story... sorry. Don't give up. Most people who put hatching eggs up for sale at auctions are proud of their birds and keep track of what they're putting into cartons.

We can't go thru that much jelly in a year. So stretching out the timebetween batches means nicer jelly. And you can make the jelly in the winter when heating up the kitchen isn't so bad.
