Murry McMurry, has a special right now for straight run Hatchery mix large fowl for $.99/each minimum 25 chicks!!!! I will suggest that he build as big as he can aford with as much shade as possible for summer and ventilation in the house as much as possible along with a good windbreak or solid shelter for winter in Oklahoma, where is your friend located?? He can get some deal right now at auction and at the hatcheries, Ideal has some great deals on their June/ July hatches right now too!!! What kind of chickens is your friend wanting?? Lynn
We are looking at Buff Brahmas or some kind of Cochins. At this time he is in he Newcastle, OK area, not too far from my place or the auction houses.

Okay, okieridge and jcatblum and any other guinea people on here, I need some advice. I had my guineas in their outdoor brooder, and went out this morning and found a dead one. Wasn't sure what happened at first. Didn't look too beat up. It was freshly dead too, rigor mortis hadn't even set in. When I inspected it closer though, it had been beat up pretty bad all around the head. I checked all the other guineas out and two more are hurt. One is hurt REALLY bad, and the other, not so much. The thing is, it's all three of my lavender ones. I brought the really hurt one into the house to try to get it healed up. I turned all the other guineas out of the brooder. When I put the not so hurt lavender on the ground, instead of running over with the other guineas that were all in one big group together, it ran the other direction and tried to climb in with my bantam chickens. I caught it really easily and it didn't seem to mind getting caught as long as it wasn't around the other guineas. I am just going to let the other eleven dark ones range. They're fully feathered and bigger than my bantams. Plenty for them to eat right now, so hopefully they'll be okay. I'm just so mad. Any hope for reintegrating my other two after they get well, or do guineas pretty much congregate by color?

I have a friend who is wanting to jump into chickens big time. I mean he is thinking about ordering 100 chicks from Murry McMurry to start with. I have already given him some chicks and now he wants more. What kind of advice can I give him such a pen size, broder, etc.
I assume you are talking large fowl.. allow no less than 2 ft or roost space per bird, and at least 5 sq. ft of pen space per bid. You can adjust a bit up or down based on size, breed, and purpose.

i have done business with Murry McMurry and Ideal, but i think Ideal Poultry has some of the best prices around.

MacG for the guineas are they crowded? If they don't have enough space they can hurt each other. They don't congregate by color but by flock. When they have been raised with there group they will run back to their group. With older ones if I let 2 groups run together they still will stick with the flock they belong to. Does that make sense?
They also beat theirselves up if they continuously charge at the fence. They think if they run full force into their closure enough the walls will come tumbling down. They don't seem to notice it hurts each time they hit the fence.

We have 1 confirmed dead keet today. Looks like a snake tried to swallow him & he couldn't
Also one of my rose comb RIR refuses to get off a nest. We have tried our best with the heat coming full force we are going to be proactive & give her a clutch of guinea eggs that goes on lock down tomorrow. Hopefully she makes a good guinea momma.
Girls & I have been in the garden since 6. Catching grasshoppers & other bad bugs, staking tomatoes, picking squash & greenbeans. Lunch is cooking then we are going to tackle inside chores until after dinner then back to work in the garden.
It's amazing how many neighbors visit when your tomatoes start coming off the vine.

They were crowded. I solved that problem. But these were all in the same flock. They were the 14 that I got from you at Blanchard. They've been together since. And I was wrong about the color. I meant to say it was the three coral blues that got hurt. My favorite color!

MacG I am guessing the other guinea was being bullied so he was looking for safety. With more space they should stop picking on each other. The only time I have issues with aggression is mating season.

I lost a little guinea yesterday. About 2.5 months old. It was sleeping with my adult guineas roosting on the top rail of the chicken run and when I came out in the morning, it was on the ground dead right under where it had been roosting. I know my dog didn't get this one cause it was on the inside of the run. Not real sure what happened tho. Maybe he fell of or got knocked off during the night and broke his neck?!?!
