Well the 10x20 pen is DONE!!! Kurt and I got out there after work and got busy and finished it. My older cukoo marans chicks are now in the big pen. I hated to move them at dusk but I wanted them moved asap. My little pullet that got to hot yesterday still isn't a 100% so I am going to give her a 5 day treatment of Denegard and put some save a chick sprinkled on her starter crumbles.
My little Jack is sick running a fever and a headache. So will be making a trip to Edmond to see the pedi. my sister has Rocky Mountain Tick Fever so I want to have him checked just to make sure it is just a virus.

has anyone or does anyone use a nipple water system? pros? cons?

I did try them last year & I'm one of the few people who didn't like them. What I didn't like is they only give a few drops of water at a time and it seemed the birds were constantly drinking from them trying to get enough. Plus I still had to change the water out every day because it got hot. I didn't want them to have to try so hard to get water when it was so hot out. They took to them quick though.

Hi y'all went to work came home did house work then worked out side till dark I'm ready for some rest I hung brand new box fans for the chickens earlier and gave fresh cold water and cold lettuce along with feed for the chickens dinner. They was happy little chickens. I have a question. If a chicken has crossed beak but can eat and drink with no problems they should live a happy mostly normal life right? I have two 4 month old americona pullets with crossed beak they eat and drink fine and r super sweet they will come right to your hand and try to lay down in your hand I just love them. Sweetest girls I have on the whole place.

This morning was nearly unbearable with the humidity but with the breeze this afternoon Teva and I were able to get some fence work done so the horses can have fresh pasture. Took off a load of batteries today too so the pay today wasn't too bad.

But tomorrow is a work day and I am going to start and finish early. Go in at 5 and leave at 1 which should only get about 2 hours of intense heat at the shop. I think that it's time to start running the Portacool.

Often times they have problems eating and drinking. The crossed beak should get worse as they get older too which will compound the problem.

The solution is to use deeper feed and water bowls so they are able to get food and water easier.

Normally the bottom beak closing into the top beak will keep it trimmed and in good shape. With a crossed beak bird you may have to trim the bottom beak later on as it grows or use an emory board on it occasionally to keep it as it needs to be. Where to trim should be fairly easy to see as the new growth will be lighter in color then the rest of it. The top will have to be trimmed too but since there is not a tongue to get in the way it is easier to use clippers on it.

One note about the Poke, the berries are supposedly poison.

Don't eat the poke at that stage! Best thing to do is pull it out. It will still probably come back next year anyway. Some people eat the shoots when they are young but I've never tried it.

I'm not enjoying this heat for sure. Still waiting on word of my husband's job. It just stinks to have to worry and wait for answers. We were just getting back on our feet after two years with no job. Something has to give with this economy. We had just started a savings account to put money aside for buying some land in two years but once again that's on hold. At this rate we're going to be too old to do anything with land once we can buy it. Still just worried about being able to keep my animals. It's hard to even go out and look at them knowing that I might have to give them all up. Especially my turkeys ... we've wanted to have a turkey farm for heritage breeds for a loooooooong time, since before we got married 19 years ago and we finally were able to start a breeding trio this year and now ...
