***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Thanks Christina and Nana, Lowe's had 7'x100 deer netting for under $10 (they matched the online price) so to start with I got 200' of it. I also got hardware cloth to make windows in the Brahma girls 4x8 coop and a fan just so I don't have to worry about it getting too stuffy in there. The spread of the tree covers that entire 50x50 yard, I love that tree.
Will the chickens get caught up in the deer netting? I think I'm going to drape it down the outsides of their coop walls plus put it on the outside of their fence but on the backside of that yard it's either going to have to go on the inside of the fence or I could line the fence with it and drape just a bit on the ground, or something. I don't want the chickens getting tangled up in it.
I've always hated snakes. But now they've killed one of my babies so right or wrong every snake I can catch is going to die.

Wanted to wait until it was done before posting pics...but this is what I have been working on the last few weeks

Started with some maple 3/4" plywood and a couple sticks of oak...A little cutting, a little routing...whole bunch of sanding and finish coats...

The final product, an incubator that will hold 5 Miller auto turn racks and not look like dookie in my living room, lol!
I always admire people with skill.

We have three Pyrenees and the heat is hard on them . They have been groomed for the heat but the two older dogs still seem stressed so they are in our horse trailer all day with the AC on . They come running every morning for us to put them up for the day . We almost lost them last year because of the heat .

Hooked up my misters yesterday for the poor chickens and guineas . This heat is just awful !
My dogs are usually lazy so I don't notice much difference.

Well birds are all fed and watered and I put out frozen water bottles in each pen. We are all officially at the fireworks stand now. I will go home one time a day to feed and water. I made sure each pen had more than one sorce of water so if they spill one they have another to drink from.

If you are in the Chandler area come by and say hello to us we are 3/4 miles east of Walmart on hwy 66. You dont have to be buying fireworks just come by and chat.

Good evening all. Every thing is good here all animals are ok I was worried about them today while I was at work but everyone is fine. Chickens have new tarps on top of runs for shade new fans for air and ice bottles they are happy chickiees.
How do you keep the wind from tearing the tarps? I bought some shade cloth today hoping the wind wont catch it as easy since it has tiny holes.

I hatched out some bantam cochin eggs "just to see what would happen". My bad. I don't want more cochins at the moment. I have these two pure bred buff Cochin bantams. They were hatched on Friday, June 15 and at an unseemly early hour in the morning on Saturday, June 16.

I'm guessing I have a cockerel and a pullet. What do you guys think?

I'm guessing cockerel on this one because of the redder wings and the tail tufts, and it seems there's slightly more going on with the comb (Edit: and wattles). Also, the chick just acts "cockier".

I'm guessing pullet on this one. Comb is smaller, no tail feathers (though you can't see it here) to speak of, and white in the wings.

Cockerel

Pullet

Pullet

Cockerel.

What do you guys think? Also, and most importantly, does anyone want them? They are two weeks old. They're out of really nice birds, I think.

Papa

Mama

Edit: I am a terrible person. I just thought "Well, if no one wants them, I could maybe show them at Shawnee." Help. Someone save me.
Edit again: These are out of the trio I bought from mjgigax.

Can snakes climb 6' walls or fences? If so could deer netting be draped somehow on the outside walls of a coop to stop them?
A snake got through chicken wire into a pen and killed my beautiful 3 mo old Bantam Cochin boy. It tried to swallow him and couldn't so spit him out. It didn't bother the other 6 youngsters in there, why? I thought a snake small enough to fit through chicken wire wouldn't be able to kill a chick. Obviously I was wrong

I'm going to reline the 4x8 pen that little group was in with hardware cloth before they go back in there. But my Brahama & Ameraucana teenagers in their yard are going to have to be locked inside their coop at night, which I haven't done because of the heat. But can snakes climb the 6' tall walls of the coop and get in through the vented areas at the top? Also, are snakes scared of light? If I leave the light on all night in their coop, will that do any good?
BFrancis posted a link (tongs.com) for snake tongs. I just spent $100 on a pair of them.
The war is on.
So sorry! Was he from my chicks that you bought at Newcastle auction? I have more if you want one or some - I know replacements aren't the same thing

Oh, I could give her my pair I just hatched from you! I didn't think of that. Of course, she might want yours more. Direct from the source and all.
