***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Just lost a hen to what we are pretty sure was egg binding a few minutes ago. I found her on the ground not moving much but her tail feathers moving up and down. I picked her up and put her in the nest box thinking maybe she was just having trouble with her first lay. I watched her in the nest box and her vent was contracting but nothing was happening. We brought her in and put her in a warm bath for 30 minutes then massaged her. We were going to put her under a warm light when she seized in my arms and died. Every time I lose a chicken I think maybe this chicken business is not for me, but I will be ready to "get back on the horse" tomorrow I'm sure.

SCORE!

About a month or so ago, I answered a Craigslist ad for layers for $5 apiece. I lucked out and called the guy first, and he let me have them. Very nice birds (5 of them) about 18 months old. Too old for his setup, but perfect starters for mine. He said he would call if he needed to move some more.

Today he called.

In two weeks I will be picking up 40 or so layers for $5 apiece. I think he wants to sell to me because he knows I'm moving mine to pasture, and he runs a pasture operation.

Exciting! Just didn't know where else to share.

Need some pricing help--
We have some melons going to market tomorrow. All small - sugar baby or small crimson sweet -- they are about cantaloupe size. Thinking $3 each Does that sound right?

Buster awesome deal on the hens.
Army wife-- sorry about your hen.
Erin you still have a chance for fall tomatoes-- and think of it this way-- u already got more tomatoes this yr than anyone did last yr!

I know the feeling. I lost my best Partridge Cochin hen, Thelma, tonight. She was fine at 6:00 but dead in the coop at 8:00.

I have two of her daughters, Lavern and Shirley, to keep her sister, Louise, company. She was 3 yrs. old, had beautiful lacing and was one of my first birds. I console myself saying she sure had a good life, well the best I could give her. Seems they all are my favorites.

Sounds excellent to me. Does pricing depend on where the market is? When i was selling my jewelry and bags at markets, pricing was the hardest part. I like to make alot and not price too high and sell volume "so to speak" but pricing too low and buyers don't see the item as valuable.

Well this was my Shirley. Laverne is still doing good. This one was so young it would have been her first egg. Also my chickens seem to have mites I noticed while helping her. Hubby said he checked them and didn't see any mites, but I guess he is getting old and blind. So on the agenda for tomorrow is treating them with DE and upping the calcium. I think part of the problem is they seem to like the grower feed more then the layer feed. I put the grower out for the younger chickens.

I've found the same to be true with my mechanic work. Seems that the more you charge the happier the customer is with the work.

People are indeed strange.

Now I gotta go dig out my Doors CD. LOL

It's probably lice, not mites and DE won't touch it. Get some Ivomec Eprinex (not just plain Ivomec). You only have to put about 3-4 drops on a regular sized chicken every 3-6 months, the stuff is great. If you have Frontline at home (if you have a dog) you can use that also.
