***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Just went out to see what Shiloh was barking about. There was a pair of beutiful deer in the back yard. I don't know a lot about deer and what sizes mean, but these were pretty big and one had smallish antlers. Didn't get a good enough look at him to see how developed they were. The weren't unduly alarmed by Shiloh, but my being there too made them move off, but not in a panic by any means. Seems an odd time of day for deer to be out. Our entire two acres are fenced, but not with anything that will stop deer.

that is so neat! wonder if they were looking for water??

if the weather forcasts are right, this weekend is the last of the 3 digit temps...!

sad when mid 90s sound cool- me and the chickens will be very pleased!

Well the good news was our entire yard was so wet from all the chicken sprinklers that all these fools setting off fireworks last night out here in the country didn't scare me quite so bad. We've got the grass so short and the ground so wet for the birds that the fire wouldn't have went anywhere :)

Oh, me, too. My big Cochins are my special babies. And of course my Serama, Channing. Oh and I just adore my Dark Brahma girls and my Faverolles and all my bearded Ameraucana.....and of course my rumpless Araucana! I'm in my 50's and act more like a kid when it comes to wanting some of every breed :) I've not yet ever even hatched any of my own eggs, spring will be fun this year hatching from my own.

Since we're only about two blocks from the lake, I doubt they were looking for water. Might have been looking for more hostas, but they've eaten almost all of them already! Used to have about 150 named varieties; between the deer, gophers and voles, have only about 15 now.

I have a question for those worming with medications, what do you do with the eggs that they lay after medicating, how long do you hold back before eating eggs or selling after worming???? I can not worm all my birds at one time due to the fact I have egg orders to fill and will not sell eggs for eating if I am worming the hens. Thanks, Lynn

I scrambled mine for the broodies, baby chicks, and dog. How long I "discarded" eggs depended on what information I found on Google about the specific med.

Good lord-people won't pay 30 cents for a chick at an auction and this BUG is selling for almost $50 lol!!

McGuyver, I go around 1 by 1 and individually worm each one. It's easier now because each group has their own yard with anywhere from 2-12 birds per yard.
There's a ton of controversy concerning using Ivomec as a wormer, I'm not going to start an argument but do a bit of research. It's my opinion it's useless except for mites and lice.

Hm. Don't know about birds, but I've used it on dogs for years and been happy with the results :) I didn't know it was questionable for birds, how come?

Oops, sorry I was one of those fools. We shot them off in the middle of our property so if it did catch anything on fire it would be our yard, hose and extinguisher at the ready. Now I know for next year I don;t need to buy any. I can't wait till we get the front porch I have in mind up cause we'll be able to sit there and watch over the hill. There were tons of good fireworks visible from my front door!

If you happen to have any wandering younger pearl guineas would you let me know. They are probably mine. I was displaced last week while DH was finishing flooring here and he didn't feel like helping the stupid guineas around the fence, then we had some more go missing last weekend. I think the adults chased off the last ones, but I noticed my ducks are standing up to the older guineas and letting the young ones take up with them. Anyway I'm missing 6. 7 actually, but I think one got eaten the same day our turkey got eaten since there was a tuft of feathers I found elsewhere that day from a pearl.

I'm headed out to move some hay around in the barn. I had to wait until the outside temperature cooled down a bit. I want to be sure I can get behind all the bales, and I want the cats back there too, so that we can keep the mice out of them as much as possible (wishful thinking, I know).

I gave all the birds some goat milk yogurt today. They gobbled it like it was candy. I let the cats clean out the mason jars once I've emptied them for the chickens. Casper (Cassie), out white cat, had her head in up to her shoulders. She's a big fan of yogurt.

My kittens are a big fan of whipped cream, when they here the whipped cream noise (I use the pressurized can) they come running. I have to give them some if I don't want a kitten on my head trying to reach my coffee cup out of my hand while wailing at the top of her lungs.

Feeling proud of my main dogs today. We had a hawk attack and they about took it out. If it was about 2 seconds slower they would have. They don't like critters messing with their chickens.

Which makes for interesting days when we do processing.

We had an Anatolian years ago that at kidding time would round up all of the kids and put them under the milk stand. The kids could go to the moms to nurse but the moms could not go get their kids. I went to check things out one evening and I noticed a new kid in the bunch so I just reached down and scooped it up which brought Sheba to her feet and I knew that I had screwed up big time.

I could see the confusion on her face because she wasn't just really sure on whether to bite me or not but as I slowly put the kid back I could see the tension leave her body and once the baby was safely under the milk stand Sheba came over and nuzzled me as if to say "you almost made me do something I didn't really want to do"

I broke a prime rule that day and in the years that passed if I talked to Sheba first everything was good, I could go over and inspect the kids with her at my side watching my every move.

Now the funny thing was when we got a litter of pups out of her she didn't care who handled them and from day one. She wasn't nearly as protective of them as she was the goat kids!
