***OKIES in the BYC III ***

SDSKnifeworks-I'm so sorry. It might have been the heat on top of the stress of moving to a new home. I do have fans in all the coops though, never hurts to have air moving through there.

Mommapoppy-what kind of Brahmas????? And how are you sexing them at hatch? I had to wait 3 wks to tell with my Dark Brahmas. i want more Dark Brahma girls really bad.

We were so excited to get our new birds home last night.  Took them treats, talked to them, tucked them in, got up this morning and let them out.  All seemed fine.  I came home from work early to check on them and the two australorps were lounging in the shade.  The two buffs were in the coop scratching around.  They came out and were panting a little but seemed fine otherwise.  I sprayed a bit of the run with water hoping it would help cool things off but they pretty much ignored it.  A little later I was leaving to go have dinner with family and one of the buffs was in a nesting box while the three others were out walking around.  All seemed fine.

We just got home and the buff that was in the nest is dead.  What did I do wrong??  They have shade, water, plenty of ventilation in the coop....I'm at a loss.  I felt of her to see if she were trying to lay an egg but couldn't feel anything.  There was some waste around her rear but it looked like it was post mortem.  Please help me?  I don't want anything to happen to the rest of my birds.  Do I need to add a fan inside the coop??  The temp in there does not seem higher than outside.

All three of the other birds are out foraging and seem to be acting fine.

The kids are dissapointed but haven't had time to get really attached.  I think I'm more mad at myself than anything else.  I just don't know what I did wrong?!

I don't think it was anything you did wrong. Maybe they were kept under misters or AC in their old home and thus aren't aclimated.

Happens sometimes.

Buster I am sure they are looking to use the space for the most popular items. Computer space, DVDs & digital books are prime now. Are they doing doing digital books yet?

Picked another 50lbs of tomatoes tonight. Told DH to prepare for a salsa making weekend. I will deinfatly need his help to run 2 canners & get all these put up! When I lived in town I had multiple friends that were eager to help can. Now that we relocated I lost all my canning buddies!

SD I agree stress can easily kill a bird. Espically if she was scared to leave the coop she may have over heated.

I bought a mister and hooked it up to the garden hose. I turn it on before I leave for work. The chickens love it. They run through it at first but eventually, they figure out that it is cool and refreshing.

. I would also be at a loss. It is hot, but in the shade it wasn't terrible today. I keep a fan and mister going during the hottest part of the day, but I still wonder if the heat would do it today. I agree about the added stress of the new home. I'm new to this so I don't really have any words of wisdom for you. Hugs to you!

Most people sex them by the wings. It can only be done during the first one to two days. After that, it is a waiting game until they either color out or crow. LOL

Got 3 baby chickie doos today, poco said one more was pipping tonight though. The three I got tonight are safely tucked under my broody girl.

Elwood, hope you made it home safely, nice to meet you.

Does anyone here know if a blind hen will still lay eggs? I went with my kids to go pick out some RIR Pullets and I ended up getting a blind hen as well. She is supper sweet, but I'm kinda worried now about my 6 hen limit with her. Do you think she will be able to lay being almost blind? Thanks.
