Looks like a cool front might be coming through. The outside temp just dropped from 99 degrees to 94 degrees.

I have lost another pre teen to a day time preditor. I was out spraying water at about 6:30 pm and she was there, then Gary went and locked up at about 8:30 and she was gone. We set out the live trap again, I'm assuming it is a cat since it was a day time loss and only one young chick.

I just heard a weird noise and went out to investigate. My guineas were all looking in one direction with their heads stretched out. More were joining them making their warning noise. Then I saw it. A raccoon was headed toward one of my N.N.hens. I got my rifle and headed toward it, but it didn’t see me because of the noisy guineas trailing it. They began to encircle it by the time I got close. They were in attack mode, and began taking turns charging at it. The coon started running from them, right toward me. That gave me a good shot at the coon.
Now this is broad daylight, 10:00 in the morning, sun shining and 90 degrees. Could she have been rabid? I picked her up by the tail to remove her just in case. .

Good for the Guineas! My guess is *not rabid since it was trying to get away from the Guineas. But always assume they are and handle strange animals accordingly, that's my motto.
How long can this temperature keep up?? If I could I would sure move somewhere with cooler summers. I'm just so tired of 110-117 degrees for 2 months in the summer.

I have a couple of hens who are losing feathers on their head. One of those already has tons of pin feathers growing back in. They are both 1 year old and have never molted before. Is this molting season? I thought they were suppose to molt in the fall. Or, should I be checking for a problem?

How many roosters do you have? Are those hens favorites (I mean of the roosters, not yours.)?

I'm so tired of the hens losing head feathers and having to wear aprons to keep from losing back feathers because of males breeding them. Mechiel, that's probably why your hen is losing head feathers. I put the caponizing of the cockerels off until it's not so flipping hot but that's going to be what I do. Even with adults it'll at least stop the breeding behavior, I don't care that it won't stop the crowing in adults. My LF Faverolles cockerel is 4 months old and so big and so gorgeous.....I'm going to give him *16* girls in his yard in the hopes he doesn't wear them out so maybe I won't have to end up getting that one caponized. I love my girls and they're so pretty with intact feathers.
I guess I have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to the boys wearing the girls out

Just got in had to go back up to Hinton an keep the road blockd on old 66 to Gary Lucky i talkd some one in to taking my place so i could go to Newcastle sale ..The fire was all most out tel the wind come up an it took off again ...Tony O seen you post about the coon it is so dry out this way every thing is drying up the dear are coming in an drinking from the bird bath's an eating the peach's off of the tree's.. Thing's that didnt go dry last yr are dry now,, An the way it look's it's only going to get worse ..Tony keep your gun ready because they are probly a bunch of young coon's close by ,,,

I know. Some roos are so rough with the hens that you want to knock them over.

Galahad has 17 girls, and none are looking ragged, even though he has a few favorites- seems the more girls the better- oddly, the silky roo from coral has his 2 cochin girls and neither of them are ravaged- gotta be the breed...

hadd a nice visit with coral and have a dominquer pullet now, be interesting to see the difference between that and a barred rock-
