***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Les, sorry to hear of your loss of birds, as we all know these things happen far to often. at least you still have the breeder stock to make more of what you want.

The show season is closing in fast, the first show outside of county fairs wil start in Newcastle come October, who all plans to show this year?

Last yr one of the dogs got hit by porcupine twice, wasn't fun. The 2nd time was worse, then it didn't happen again. Sorry to hear about the dog attack.

Buster, think we got 1 white egg yesterday, not sure if we got any today. They will come back around I am certain. Gave them some watermelon today, they didn't touch it.

I wanted to plant some beets & radish today, but I am waiting until Tuesday. We did thin out our corn some, it is doing really well so far. Also picked 42 pounds of tomatoes. I keep saying there isn't anymore left to pick & some how they always surprise me. Not sure what DH schedule is like next weekend, we may try to make Newcastle since it will be cooler.

Thanks Les for the friendship, I have enjoyed you and Teva along the way also, Les I never even thought about Porcupines in Oklahoma, hope the goat is better. I love to talk chickens and I am a packrat so auctions are right up my alley, but I have to control my going so I don't spend money!!!! LOL I did go to Guy Rose yesterday and took some eggs to a friend and on down to Perkins to my daughter, got her out of bed at 10 am!!! LOL I met a young man from Morrison there to buy chickens and he had never had chickens before, so we looked everything over and and I told him which one I would bid on and he seemed happy with that, I didn't stay for the auction, there wasn't a lot there though. It was a bit warm today but I will take it, lots better than in the hundreds!!! Have a great day all! Lynn

Buster,
Those battery hens are often on a 32-37% protien ration, so the move, change in environment and feed source will have an effect as well as the horrible heat we had so give them a few weeks to adjust and I am sure you will be very happy with your purchase. You should be able to keep up good production for a few years out of them as they are often swapped out just before they are due to molt as they are only there for production and molting hens seldom lay well.

Hey, Carl! Good to see you. Thanks for the info.

Why that high protein? They don't use their muscles and crank out the eggs. I would think they would skimp on that and load up on the calcium, but it appears to be the reverse, I guess. I just checked on them and they seem to adjusting. A couple tried to squeeze out the screen door when I opened it. And they finished all their feed already. Last few days they would only peck at it. Most of the people I have talked have said their poop doesn't smell like regular chicken poop. Guess that's the weird blend?

I haven't had a chance to move them under the shade trees... this recluse bite is slowing me way down. Going to something called a wound center tomorrow to have it evaluated and see where we are headed with it.

Anyway, their pens are ready for them, so I'm going to round them up tonight in the dark and move them over,

Any one ever deal with CedarCreekHatchery. I just ordered 10 Dark Brahma chicks from them, from reading on their site they don't set the eggs till they have orders for the chicks. Les, sorry for the loss, it may be a good thing to set some live traps for dogs. Then have the owners pay for the birds lost, if the dogs cost them money they are more likely to keep the dogs confined, The short time I was animal control in Blanchard I threatened the owners of two dogs that were causing trouble in their neighborhoods for months, I threatened to fine the owners and all of a sudden the dogs that the people couldn't keep confined were confined.

Buster, I'm sure it's stress, all the hens i've bought quit laying for a few days, mine have always started laying again after about a week.

As for the Blanchard auction comments, I have to admit one of the guys running it works hard and I believe he does a great job. Too bad another one is running people away.
