Erin I think that of my older birds all I lost was about three.

We have one old hen that we call bumblefoot because of a loss of toes that if you pen her she goes to roost and won't come off of it. She is a permanant free ranger and along with one other have dodged Coyotes and others for a great many years, Teva and I figure that she is around 8 or so, maybe more. Wish the youngsters would have payed attention to her because she just disappears when trouble is around, I can't even find her if she doesn't want to be found.

Oh my Joe that is alot of new birds!!!!! And you have a day job too right? Sounds like a bunch of work!

Mike I miss the local sales here too. I don't think a wk goes by where someone doesn't ask me about the Cement chicken auction. It was a favorite of many!!!

Well I need to go back out and work on the Dakota. Put a timing chain and gears in it today and all I have left to do is an oil change in case any AF/water got into the pan while it was open.

Those of you who use an incubator, what would you recommend for a novice, easy no fuss, effective incubator. I will only be hatching is smaller batches say under 20 and more likely around 12ish eggs at any one time. I would like it to be cost effective too. I want to use a broody chicken, but Gary keeps saying he would like to get me an incubator in case our girls don't cooperate on the broody front. (He feels way bad that I lost the chickies that I really wanted)

Joe, I have 2 Porcelain D'Uccle pullets I got as day olds from the feed store last spring, they're just little hatchery girls but they're so cool. Yours are way way better quality and I do believe I'll have to get some of that kind of quality!

Oh Kass, my Brinsea Eco20 holds 24 eggs (28 if you take the separators out). They're octagon shaped so if you didn't want to spend the extra $80 on a turner all you do is turn it 3 times a day, just whenever you walk by or think about it basically. I think the incubator itself was around $150 with shipping-jeez, I can't even remember. It's awesome though. It's really really hard to keep humidity up where it needs to be so make sure you get a good humidity sensor.

I searched high and low for one of my favorite birds that was AWOL, a blue bantam Asil hen, since I didn't find a carcass anywhere I held out hope and low and behold she came in to roost with her mate tonight. She makes pretty babies!

Hey Carl, did you see the pictures of the Buff Columbian with the blue feathering?

I didn't even know we had porcupines in OK, and never would have thought of a goat getting quilled! When I first read your post I thought I wasn't understanding correctly, then you posted the pics. lol
