***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Here's the 10 little babies that this little Cochin fought so hard to have. Poor little thing, wanted babies so bad she had to hide under a building so we didn't take her eggs, I feel terrible.
She hasn't molted this year so she looks sun burnt and ragged compared to how she looked 4 months ago. Plus I suppose living under a shed like a refuge doesn't do much for your grooming. She sure loves her babies though.
If I keep them together will she always be alright with them? Or does it depend on the bird?

Cochin moms make great moms. Keeping them together should be just fine. She should protect them and teach them what is good to eat. I have kept two moms (a LF Cochin and a Minorca) with babies in the same pen and they did great together.

Nana, I mean permanently. I want to build them their own yard and not put the mama back into the layers yard. I'll have to place or caponize the boys but I'll deal with that when the time comes.
You know-like Christina's daughter does-"keep the family together" lol

Our leghorn chickens have now mastered the art of free ranging & bug catching. They seem to prefer the slow moving beetles over fast jumping grasshoppers. When we open the gate all but 3 run out into the pasture. Think that is pretty good considering they had never seen bugs or dirt a few months ago. They still pile up in dark corners, not sure if I will ever break that habit.
Poor guineas managed to enter an empty coop but not find their way out. Took 3 of us to get them out of the coop that had an open door the entire time.

Hope everyone had a great time at the auction!

Quote: Why yes! MacGuyver. Yes I did. You must have some ... ??? maybe ... too ... many ... ??? maybe some you'd like to sell to us???

I keep thinking I'd find some at an auction if we could get to one but it seems like when we have money to get to one we don't have the day to get there and when we have the time to get to one, we don't have the money to buy anything. Jeesh. I am going to remedy that if it kills me. Time to start a chicken buying auction fund jar that no one else knows where is ... or maybe they won't even know I have it!!

Oh lordy lordy lordy ... spent the day working helping a couple clean out their garage. It was as bad if not worse than some of the houses I've seen on Hoarders. I hope I don't end up getting some disease from all the rat and mouse poo. I swear there was at least two inches of dog hair on absolutely everything. And we have to go back tomorrow. I'm hoping we get it done tomorrow because I don't want to have to go back Monday as well. The lady was helping us pretty well but the man kept disappearing and spent 7 hours going through 4 boxes of books. The other three of us cleared 22 boxes of books, threw out about a fourth of a dumpster (those big long ones), moved out several big pieces of furniture, organized 1/2 the garage, and swept it out. Been home for 2 hours now and have done three loads of laundry, cleaned chicken coop and rabbit pens, had a shower and ate supper. I may not be able to get up and go anywhere tomorrow. We still have to go pick up the animals at the fair tonight and get them resettled but we can't do it until after 9:00 pm.

Don't think we'll do the fair next year with animals though unless my daughter wants to do the bantams. They did okay. Everyone else has been stressed out big time. Our turkeys are especially upset by the whole thing. We had to move their cages away from the fence to keep the little kids from kicking at them because no one's there to monitor the barn. I don't like that. We got there this morning before 8:00 am and the animal building was wide open and no one was there. Anyone could have come in and taken whatever they wanted, chickens, turkeys, rabbits, sheep, goats, ducks, geese, ... We were not happy. But I guess the fact that no ones animals have gone missing attests to how honest most people are ... either that or they aren't crazy enough to actually take on chickens, ducks, geese, and turkeys. Lol.

What exactly are "longhorn" chickens? I assume you meant leghorn ... but my mind, after my loooooong day, has pictures of little chickens with massive horns running around now.

Yes Leghorn-- but if I don't captilize it my iPhone auto corrects to longhorn! Got to love it!! I spend much time fighting with autocorrect!!!

What brave little white souls they are! I knew they'd come around :)
If you need more guineas.....our female guinea wasn't around today and my husband found her sitting on a nest of 14 eggs under a truck here. Last time a coon or something kept stealing her eggs so I took them and put them in the incubator, MacGuyver took the babies. I figured the same thing was going to happen this time and my 2 big Cochin girls have been sitting on imaginary eggs for 3 wks so I stuck them under them. At least they're inside of a building and locked up at night. I figure that'll break them of wanting to set on eggs when a bunch of screaming keets hatch out

Found a picture of our little OEGB, Chester Wayne, we got at Newcastle last spring. He just adores his Silkie girl. He's way bow-legged and swaggers like John Wayne, that's how he got his name. My husband thinks he's the coolest little guy, we all do.

Hello! I'm in Tahlequah.
I agree I need a few more chickens. I guess I was wanting to make sure I could do this before I loaded up. Ha ha. It's only been a few days, but my babies seem happy and well. I might grab a few more from Atwoods tomorrow.
