What kind of chickens do you have?

Christina, tell Taron that sucks and I feel for her. That Silkie had a really great life and at least she had the dignity to die where she was cared about.
I've never had a bossy Silkie hen so I think that's probably not the norm. If another Silkie finds its way to your family then so be it, it was meant to be.

Kavellion, your Fav boys are beautiful! I'm thinking I'll probably end up making my older Faverolles boy a 4x8 pen under a roofed area in his girls yard, maybe let him out with the girls only once a week or for a few hours a day or something. He's just far too armorous for the girls. They don't even want to come out of their shed in the morning because he runs out 1st and is standing there waiting for early morning romps like it's his right as a male or something. I adore him though and he's such an excellent tempered boy.

Cathie, I'm so sorry about Kurt's D'Uccle. It's hard for ME to lose my pet birds, I know full well how hard it must be for Kurt. He puts so much time and care into his birds.
I have 4 *Bantam* Faverolles girls who religiously lay an egg a day, they're in with this gorgeous Blue Salmon male. The Bantams Favs only get about 2 lbs and I'd love to save you or one of your kids some eggs to hatch from them if you like Favs lol Super sweet tempered birds, gentle and docile like Cochins. And the Bantams would be easy keepers and not take up much room. You'd never even know they were there

. Here's a picture of the Blue Salmon boy and his girls. You know you want some! They can be your Halloween hatch, you can name them after the people in the Adam's Family haha!

My Silver Laced Cochin boy has a yellow cast to his skin, they said they might've nicked his liver during surgery, But his appetite is excellent so that indicates he's not having liver problems. He also can't walk at all or even support himself with this huge splint. I've got to call them in a little while and we might have to redo the splint. If it had been an option to amputate in the future if need be I might've done that but Cochins are just too big to get around on only 1 leg, I don't think that would've been fair. I don't feel like I'm being so fair to him right now with this big splint either. But I'm already so far emotionally and financially into it that I'll see it through to the end no matter what the outcome. Don't know that I'd encourage someone else in this position to have the tendon surgically fixed though.

No, she'll bring them to the opening and they'll jump.

I'm going to put a bed of leaves under the tree to help break the fall.

so is that normal procedure for a muscovy??? wow!

In the wild, they're from the central & south American jungles and roost in the trees at night. Some of mine do here too. I'm no expert on them, but I guess when they see a good spot for a nest, they use it no matter where they are.

Years ago there was an old house here that was falling apart. One of them flew in a hole in the ceiling where some plaster had fallen. She was so far back under there that I couldn't reach her. That was about 7 ' or more up from a wooden floor.
th.gif
One day I saw her heading toward the pond with 2 dozen baby ducklings all in a row following her.

They had to have jumped to the floor from there. All were healthy and none were hurt from the jump.Mine usually like to nest in the same place over again if they have a successful hatch there.

One in particular nests in a 5 gallon bucket in among some trash with a cracked bottom.

When she hatches and wants to bring her babies out, she gets in and out a few times and they “CLIMB” up out of that bucket. She's setting there again right now.

Oh how did I know Mitzi the enabler would be along to encourage me, lol. I might have to take you up on eggs (I mean they don't count until they crow or lay eggs right? haha! Can you sex them at hatch? That might make it easier if I could keep like 4-6 girls and one roo (I mean hey I do have that 10x20 pen that is empty,

Kass....Last night I was reading some old posts and I laughed my tail (I'm not a araucana) off when someone asked you what was wrong with your chickens that didn't have feathers on their necks....and I think they were really serious.
lau.gif
I guess out here...we are so Hillbillie....that we think everyone knows about all the kinds of chickens...LOL..............By-the-way...........Really beautiful babies. I had some arrive thismorning and for me, that's the funnest part of the whole chicken deal!!!!!...........How old do them babies gotta get before them feathers grow on their little necks?

We have about five acres, and we got an estimate for chain link fencing. The guy wanted $15K! I want to do it cheaper with another kind of fencing, but the OKC laws are strict about what kind of fence you can have. It makes me really grumpy because there are loads of fences out here that don't meet the legal requirements, but I'm scared if we just put up fencing someone will complain and we'll owe a fine or something.

Yikes!!!

I just got material for a 6 ft privacy fence and my boyfriend and I (& hopefully some friends) are going to put it up ourselves.
*sigh* I guess I can't be lazy on this one. ;)

We spent most of the day so far out the yard working on getting the fence area ready.
