***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Thanks for your suggestions, everyone.

Christina, Do you use injections or the powder? If you use the powder how long do you give it to them?

What do you mean "brutuly cold"?

I use powder for for 5 days. It is way concentrated & last forever.

I say brutally cold since it was 90 here yesterday suppose to be in the 80s all wk then the high Friday is 52. I know a high of 52 isn't cold in Michigan but after the 80s & 90s this wk them to a high of 52 that is brutally cold to me!!

Yes, temps sure fluctuate - bipolar weather

I got my ornery Brown Red Cochin boy back from OKRaceFan. I'd forgotten how huge he was. The hen that came with him is 1/2 again as big as my other Cochins. I think he'll be living alone through the winter until I can see if I can hit on something that works to lessen his aggression. My teeny Serama 'attacks' everyone but me and my daughter has a rooster that tries to tear me up but he adores her, so it's possible this guy will settle down and become a one-person rooster or something. He's only just over 12 months old so I'll give it a shot.
Okracefan also gave me *8* LF Cochin eggs :)) Plus I have Brabanter eggs coming

. Right when I thought I was done hatching

. My last hatch (3 BBR Phoenix) are 4 wks old now so it's been 7 wks since I set eggs. I'm ready!

Congrats on the eggs and the return of your roo. Will you be pairing him with a Blue hen to get some Lemon Blues?

I have an incubator full with 4 dozen eggs and collecting for the next insert.
I'm making a hatcher for the ones that come out on the 28th.
I'll candle the second batch and then insert the third batch.
The 7 banties hens are laying pretty consistantly and when I candled 2/3 were fertile. That batch of eggs was before I put the pairs in breeding cages. So the second and third batches are from these pairings.
All the roos are now caged so that the Rosecombs have the run of the floor. I'm also saving Cochin and CW as well as selected F1 cross eggs.
Hubby just shakes his head now....

We are trying to get things lined up for next spring and looking for a gently used cabinet incubator, Sportsman 1502 style or similar. Willing to pick up within a couple of hours of Tulsa. Anyone looking to sell one or know a place I could start looking? I could attend some auctions but I don't know if it is worth my time. Do these come up at auctions frequently or rarely? Keeping an eye on Craigslist is the only route I know, trying to list in a chicken trade group on Facebook as well. Send me a message if you have any connections I could use!

I would place ad's in wanted sections of Craigslist under OKC and Tulsa there are other areas in Ok. as well, Or you can build one of your own Bfrances built his and so did Al and me as well, I doubt unless it was one really super great deal on a fully working one that I would even consider it I am in the process of building my second one, this one won't have a automatic egg turner in it just going to use it for hatching but it's all the same and a lot cheaper than buying one, I found a good deal (free) on a Sobe drink display box with a glass front, it will work out even better than the first one I built out of an old fridge, just a thought :)

Yours is going to be fancy!....mine is a styrafoam "The Huskee" chest.

I've rigged a low watt bulb on a light frame from a ceiling light and have screen and bricks with flat tubs of water with sponges for the bottom.
I've cut viewing panels in the top and applied plexiglass to those. That's so I can view the thermometer also. There are vent holes with cork plugs to help control the humidity.
I'll test the bulb strength to find the best suited one. May actually have to lift the lid on risers and drape a side to regulate the temperature.....
Once I get it finished, will post updates.

I am sure some of it has to do with the fact that the birds had a stressfull summer with the heat and then molting. I may try again in Jan/Feb hatching some more but I don't think I will do anymore late fall hatching again. Mitzi sorry I couldn't meet up yesterday I was going to Piedmont so not headed towards I-40 yesterday morning. Of course got to Piedmont only to find the games were in Elreno, I was ready to take out a coach by the end of that trip. But I am meeting up with her Monday morning in Shawnee to get her one of my cuckoo roos. I know he will be happier there than here in a all boys pen for the winter, lol. Well back to Elreno for more games today at 2, if anyone is bored and has nothing better to do come watch the games they are at the Jenks something or other gym next to the round up club grounds. Shoot yesterday they had tractor pulls going on it the parking lot!!! That is my little guys idea of a good day, haha. We watched tractor pulls between games. I told them every good basketball game should start with tractor pulls, lol.
Oh good! You 2 got ahold of each other :) I'm so glad you can place one of your boys.

I got 6 Orpington girls from Bill yesterday, decided I needed a separate Orp yard :) They're the sweetest healthiest girls!! He sure grows em' good at his place. Bill, I do appreciate the fact that they're so healthy and were born and raised in one spot at your place. I'm so paranoid about bringing in sicknesses and these girls are just as healthy and strong as can be-thank you!!
Thank you both for being willing to part with your gorgeous boys! all 3 of them are settling in peacefully. They even have a little anterage of girls following them around already. Her is a peek of them in the coop and the yard.

Thanks again ladies and to everyone else who responded to my request!

If my LF Buff Cochin ever starts laying again I will hatch those. Also when my bantam Lavender/Self-blue Cochins, Wheaten Maran and LaFletche pullets start laying I will hatch them too. My garage brooders will be busy (hopefully) There is no moreration in chickens!
