Just thought I'd let you guys know that:

I have two Buff Orpington Cockerals that need good, non rooster eating homes.
They are very friendly and will run up to you and jump in your lap as they were raised in out living room until they feathered out.
I want them to go to a person willing to give themt he love they deserve as they are very sweet boys...they will just need some ladies to love soon

Here's a thread with pix of them from about a month ago. I will take new ones today.

I am close to the Fort Smith area. No shipping.

Their names are Danny Boy and Stunnah.

We've only been twice, so I'm definitely no expert on the Maud auction, but both times we've gone they sell the birds & rabbits right after they sell the sheep & goats. Well, let me clarify that ... just after the sheep & goats, they sell eggs, then vegetables, then chicks, then bread & hostess products (apparently someone works for or buys from a Hostess bakery) and then the birds & rabbits sell. I think it was about 8:30 or 9:00 pm when they finally got to the eggs/chicks/birds. I don't know if it's common for that many goats & sheep to go thru the auction ring. I hear also that before the goats that "junk" is sold ... but we surely don't want to go that early to the auction, since I believe that it begins at 5:00 pm. I'm not much for buying junk ... well, I do tend to bring home useless things from garage sales ... it's tough for me to pass up a good garage sale!

Carla, Why didn't you just catch that snake?
I caught one over six feet long the other night and put him in a galvanized trash can with a tight lid.
When I went to check on him the next morning he was mysteriously missing.
Either I caught a spirit snake or a two legger was playing with him and the snake got away or was let go.
I have the eight year-old suspect in custody.
Monty

Let me know if you are heading out this way.

Monty, I wish I had the nerve to pick that big monster up. He was probably at least 6 foot long also.

That reminds me of when my daughter was around 11 or 12, gosh, at least 15 years ago, and we went to an exotic animal auction in Texas ... the people at the auction had caught a large black rat snake and put it in a pillowcase & auctioned it off ... my daughter wanted me to bid on it ... so for $1 we had a pillowcase with a huge black rat snake in it. The next day, we took it to a big flea market in San Antonio and she sold it to a snake vender for $10 .... she was so proud!

I think I'll just stay away from snakes ... if anyone would like to try to re-home the one that I saw, you are welcome to it! I'm sure it's somewhere in or near my barn, and there's probably relatives of it nearby.

Monty, I'd be happy to give your 8 year old this snake ... if someone will catch it for me!

DutchChic, I just might need to see what goats you have available. I can tell by what you have written that you are a responsible animal owner, and that's important ... at least to me it is. Send me a pm on what goats you have for sale, the price & what you might be interested in trade. Maybe I can talk Gerald into getting a couple of goats

As for buying animals & poultry at auctions, it is definitely buyer beware ... I know there can be diseased livestock there, and many people sell their problems to others. However, there are many reputable breeds that do sell at auctions, because it's a good way to sell without advertising or having unknown or undesirable people come to your home, and it's a great place to pick up new bloodline and pick up the rare and unusual. It helps to know who is selling them, because I do trust some individuals to sell healthy, high quality stock. Auctions are where I take my birds, eggs & chicks when I have an excess.

Oh, and I don't think I could eat a goat if it had been a member of my critter family .... I get attached to my chickens that way, too. Although I've certainly thought about making a few roosters into chicken & dumplings!

Oh yeah, I've taken excess bucks to the auction before and I know of other breeders that do too. So you *can* find disease free goats at the auction. The bad thing is, if there are other diseased goats in the pen with them, they are exposed. And, there are things a goat can have that are not obvious to the naked eye. I've bought poultry from auction before, and quarantined it and came out okay. Same with horses. I once spotted a darling little angora kid at the auction, but I just couldn't risk bringing it home to my herd. Lots of money tied up in my herd. It's definitely buyer beware. I've got a bunch of excess young roosters that I'm going to have to take to auction soon I guess...no one seems to want them.

Thanks for all the thoughts on the coop guys.

As of right now, the plan is to build the coop as one side of our pen, or put it inside of the pen, so I was wondering about the open coop so I wouldn't have to get in and out of the pen to open it up and close it every day. Our chickens will spend most of their time in the pen and will probably be allowed to free range while we're outside and can keep an eye on them.

I definitely understand about new predators showing up. The strange thing is, we've had our 1 lonely bird out there for a couple weeks now just in a dog kennel during the day and in the shed overnight. In that time I have found feathers from a blue jay on the ground near the kennel once, but no signs of anything at all actually trying to get into the kennel, even the one night I forgot to put the bird in. I don't want to think we're immune to predators, but there do seem to be very few, and even the stray cats seem completely uninterested.

I have two pens bulit off the sides of my coop (henhouse) it works well if I don't want to go inside, but I usually do anyway.
I do have a top on mine though or it would just be a big coon feeder.
