Yesterday, we finally bought a Great Pyrenees puppy!!!! She's 12 weeks old, AKC registered, solid white, born on tax day, April 15th ... so Gerald decided her name must be Iris ... for I.R.S. day ... so that's what we'll call her. After reading all about pyrenees, I think her daddy is too big ... 135 pounds, and her mom is average weight, 85 pounds. She seems to be great so far ... not interested in the chickens at all, ok with the cats & other dogs, and fell into the koi pond once already. We left her in the dining room last night with the other dogs (my shepherds have been staying in at night because of the fireworks) ... no problems whatsoever ... and put her out this morning. Super pup so far except she likes to bark a bit more than I prefer. I read where Pyrenees barking could be a problem in suburban areas and therefore they need to be kept indoors at night? Gosh, I hope she's not bad about that ... I was hoping she'd be guarding the poultry and a few goats 24 hours, 7 days a week. OK, sorry I rambled on so much about my new puppy, but she's absolutely awesome and I just had to brag on her!

Oh, and we have chicks hatching again! A couple dozen Spitzhauben and Brabanter and some Blue Orpington eggs I received from corancher ... Yea! I have some Blue Orpingtons now!

Al, don't worry about it. And thanks for the congrats!Hopefully I will be able to stay at the next auction and visit some more.

Carla, I will hopefully have my actual pictures next time, and maybe we won't all be melting. *ha* Blue Orpingtons AND a puppy!? I am SO jealous!!! I think the pup will make a great guard dog. My grandmother's is; she grew out of the barking, too. Clark came home this morning (from baling hay) just to tell me that someone offered to give us a 2 year old registered Border Collie. I hate taking in older dogs, with them having to adjust, but he is excited and is going to see it late today.

This time of year is really making me miss my birds.

I went and looked at my old chicken pens out at my parents' yesterday. Chicken poo is the best fertilizer! There are weeds over 5 feet tall growing out of the pens. Clark said that if we ever move back out to the country, I can have all the chickens I want! And I know we will move, because I want chickens.

Cammie, you should start looking at properties in the area that you want to buy. You never know when that dream property will come on the market, and at least you'll recognize when a good deal comes along. Definitely look at the property for poultry & livestock potential ... a house can always be built or remodeled! It doesn't sound to me that you and Clark are city folk, so start planning your escape back to the country. I hope you move soon, so you can have more chickens!

A 2 year old dog isn't too old to train, unless it has a really bad personality. I don't know whether border collies are good with poultry though, since they're more of a herding dog ... great for rounding up cattle & horses.

Oh we are planning our escape, don't worry. *ha* He's got cattle, after this year we will be making a pretty decent profit that will just increase every year. And we're waiting for me to finish school...

As far as this Border Collie... She is unspayed, our neighbors have pitbulls, and Clark wants to leave her unspayed and in the backyard! That's not happening. We have a cat in the house, Clark thinks she'd eat him. The man said his wife wants the dog to go because it gets into trash and chases the horses. And then he went on to say that the dog doesn't like strangers too much... I told Clark I'd rather just get a puppy and start from scratch. The dog sounds like more of a project than I want to take on.

ooh I agree with you Cammie, sounds like a lot to deal with. Why does your husband want the dog? Has he always wanted a Border Collie? Or does he want to rescue this dog from the possibility of the pound? I suppose a good dog trainer could work on the dog, if you're willing to invest the time and money.

Cammie, I vote for getting a young dog, but research the breeds to make sure you find the one that will be best suited for your lifestyle and your future country living. Make sure it will be good with your rabbit and future chickens ... hey, bring it to poultry auctions!

I agree with oiemommy about adopting from a shelter ... I've adopterd several wonderful pound puppies and I couldn't be happier with them ... and they are adult dogs. There are even pure bred dogs at most shelters. Sometimes the dogs have bad habits that are virtually impossible to break though ... like killing chickens.

I decided that we need a great pyrenees because of their reputation of being excellent poultry and livestock guardian dogs. I actually had a beautiful male great pyrenees about 5 years ago, that I adopted from the Norman Animal Shelter and he was an awesome, wonderful pet, but a pack of wild dogs attacked & killed him when he was approximately a year old. It was horrible. I chased the wild dogs away, but he bled to death ... the vet was unable to save him.

Well, I hate to do it, but I think my son is in over his head. He can't seem to manage taking care of the red silies, so they are for sale. I'll take $20 for the pair. Let me know if you need photos and I'll get some.
They are located in Mounds, just south of Tulsa. I can meet you in Tulsa if it's on a day I happen to be going there.
They both look pretty good, though the roo doesn't have much for feathering on the legs.

Egg production has been nil. I don't know how old the birds are, but they seem healthy.

Hello everyone, I just got through reading all the posts. I have been hiding out in eastern Oklahoma the last four days so I haven't been online at all. Good to see so many posts and that so many att=nded the auctions.
I want to go to Maud on Thursday but that is still up in the air. I do plan to be at Harrah on Saturday though.

I'd love to go to the Maud auction again on Thursday, but since Gerald won't be able to take off work, I doubt if I'll go. Oh, but I want to!

I intend to go to Harrah on Saturday though, and sell some more of my chicks ... white guinea chicks & jersey giant chicks, if not something else.

Monty, I'll try to gather up all my phoenix chickens & whatever extra pullets I have after putting together some pairs for the auction and you have first pick. They may possibly be bantam though .... they just aren't the size I'd expect them to be at 4 months old, but maybe they mature slower than other breeds?

I'll also probably bring a pair or two of the Egyptian Fayoumi chickens to Harrah. I must cut back!
