My tomatoes are toast...the heat and wind blew them away. I am never trying tomatoes in this miserable weather again. I am going to devise some kind of plan that uses careless weed (redstem?) and make a dang fortune marketing that krap.

smfamf ; they are black sex links & RIR they look fine but fat is not the word I would use for these two breeds LOL, after processing they look like those rubber chickens the comedians use LOL.

Marybeth : really !! I allways thought that BSL were fairly non broody. anyway I hope she does better than my silkie's did, they sat twice and abandoned the nest both times on day15. I really didn't want the silkies and only got them because I like to watch the natural process LOL so much for that.

You really think they are fat? When I pick them up, it feels like there is nothing there. They free-range and they get fresh fruit and veggies plus layer pellets. they hardly ever finish the pellets every day, but it seems like they are not gaining any weight. Their breastbone sticks out and I worry about them.

As far as breed, I'm not too certain. Most of the hens and the rooster are the dark red. There is only the one in the picture that is light.

They are definately sassy. They think that they own the world. They definately own me!

Thanks for your input.

They could be part Game chickens..Game chickens are notably lighter weight for their height and length than you would expect..Though usually their breastbones don't stick out, in hot weather, they do eat less.. The one at the lower left looks similar to my half Game roosters, except yours' tail feathers are not as long or bent downward..
I MEANT THE ONE ON THE LOWER RIGHT..

I read that layers have more pronounced breastbones. Are yours fairly young? Mine did not start feeling heavier until they were about a year old. Then they got solid... not fat, but there was a heft to them when you picked them up.

Not fat, fat. Healthy fat. Must be nice to free range. I can't because of my neighbors dog...

Why do people in rural areas always assume it's OK if your their dog roams on your property using the restroom and every other thing?

I have wondered that myself..Only one person ever stated why he won't keep his dogs (or chickens) penned and it's because, he says, they don't want to be in jail..

I actually live in town. A very small town, but still a town. The neighbors don't mind the birds free ranging because they take of the bugs. I actually have a neighbor that just lets their dogs out. My birds keep them in line. Every time the dogs come on our property, the birds send them packing. of course they are just little shih-tzus, but it is funny to watch. We are the only people on our block and the birds never cross the road. They get the whole block to theirselves. They love it. They usually don't even leave our yard, with the exception of the guineas. They like the empty lots around us, especially on mowing day. Several people in town have birds and let them free range. It is a great town. No one messes with the birds.

Hey... my new laptop comes today...! The nightmare begins...installing software, iTunes etc. I should start praying now...

Al, Ya think that's an RIR rooster? IS it dark enough? Wow that would be cool...To have an RIR roo.

Mine are not young, probly about 4 yrs old, but I have no hens left..Just the roosters.. The roosters do feel heavier than the hens..At least mine did.. But in winter they all were nice and round..Summer heat does make all of them (and my cats too) get real picky about how much food and what kind they take in..Unless they are gluttonous, in which case they just eat and get fatter and fatter..I have one cat that way, and my old rooster who is NOT a Game chicken is also that way..He prefers to keep his breast feathers plucked off so he can lay his bare skin on the ground for cooling purposes..

That is cool smfamf...you're lucky. The neighbor's dogs come over and use the restroom everywhere. Once right in front of the back door. Hubby stepped in it on the way to work. He was peeved and made empty threats. But they eat all our rabbits and stuff. I wish I could afford to hot fence the place off. That's not very neighborly either I guess. They are really nice folks...just have loose dogs. Although one night the german Shephard came over and ran coyotes off out by my coop, so I guess it pays off in some respects.

morning y'all...been feeling blah here the past few days but i feel better now..just didnt know what was wrong had no engery or anything...wish it would rain here.. we need it everythings so dang dry!!
