If you have a heat lamp as the source for heat in the coop just put the waterer under it.

Do not use the clamp on one of those lights to secure it to a rafter or beam. Take some extra time to bolt or rivet chain to the reflector and use chain and screws into wood to secure it.

We use heated dog dishes for most of our pens during freezing weather. They are set up on 1/2 x 1/2" hardware cloth on 2 x 4 frames, so the water stays pretty clean. In the few that we don't run extension cords to, we use those small, black rubber pans. They freeze, but are very easy to dump out.

I have put the water under a heat lamp - secured as suggested by NNbreeder because I had one fall off an interior pen onto a 4x4 that defined the base of the pen when I just had it secured by the clamp. Flying chickens within the shed knock things around. It smoldered, but fortunately didn't set the coop on fire. Too close for comfort.
My preference however is to use the rubber pans that I can turn upside down, stomp on to remove the chunk of ice and refill with fresh water.

Mychickens all must go through a rigorous training regime.
They are basically weaned off of needing water during the cold months and require very little to survive. They also must learn how to use tiny little pick axes to break the ice. and how to use hollow straw stems to suck water out of the waterers.
In their down time or during R&R they are required to watch survivor man.
Only the strong survive.

Now I gotta run and get some lavender dust for their pillows.

Hey All :
Had a great time at the Cement Auction as usual, I did miss the oportunity to meet some other BYCer's but I didn't even know they were there, wish I had though. Buster is becoming quite the chicken man with that chickens in the back seat deal LOL Now that's country, Jim you had me laughing.

Jeanie & Jason were there I think they wanted to check things out Hope to see you guy's at Fletcher in a couple of weeks.

Teach : I think RHA is a cool name.

KT & Mike : No problem on the cages my pleasure, wish there had been some there for sale for you guy's. Thanks again for the gift.

Carla & Gerald : Allways a pleasure as usual, too bad about the veggies though.

Mornin' all ! I've been so jealous of you guys that get to visit
at these auctions. Made it to Afton yesterday morning and we
had a little mini-POOPS there. Langshanman and mefordz, Neecy's
John and Shaun, Big Okie, and got to meet Quenston, Carolyn
and their boy. Yup, they're right in the middle of these chickens
like we all are....LOL And, Carolyn and I seem to have the same
problem....we were there to "sell" chickens and Bill and Quenston
were out there "buying" chickens !!!!!!! Sold a bunch....bought
a bunch....so didn't really accomplish a darned thing......LOL

We got another round of heavy rain here in the wee hours this
morning. Gees, hope we're not in this same pattern when it
gets below freezing.....snow is one thing, but 4 feet of it is
another !!!!

Wish Langshanman was on the forum more often so all could
congratulate him. He just got home from the Nebraska State
Fair..... He came out of there with the "PREMIER BREEDER
AWARD" !!!!!!! Dang....are us OKIE's good or what ???????

Have a good one !!!!!

Buster--I would have paid money to see you stopped at that convienance store. Chickens flopping and squawking everywhere. I bet folks that saw this thought you had flipped your lid. You made my day with that story.

I forgot to mention that I found my chickens in Pryor, from an add on craigslist. This lady has all young'uns, 16 to 18 weeks old, and a bunch or turkeys as well. Here's her add...

The rooster in the bottom left photo in that add is the one I got and the 3 pullets are really nice looking!

Her name is Christine, so if you're looking like I was give her a call.
