Morning All
Went to check on the pullets this morning and as I was saying Good morning to them I noticed there was one laying on her side not moving... thinking she was being lazy I tried to shoo her to move, all she did was flop her self to the other side, thats when I noticed she must have been smoothered last night... I picked her up and she just flopped her head to the side and tried to breathe... For a moment I thought there might be a chance but once I brought her inside the house she just kept acting like she couldnt breath, plus her body was really smooshed... Knowing my kids were standing there watching me I prayed for a lil wisdom, and explained what probably happened, that it was too cold for them and she ended up being the other chickens bed and that I was going to have to not let her suffer... My Darling Daughter who is normally the HIGH ANIMAL SENSITIVE gal remained calm while my son is is the normally opposite of his sister cried. The kids watched me as we prayed and put the poor gal out of her suffering.
I then explained to them that to be a good farmer/ rancher of anything is to know the difference in being selfish and selfless, that any animal does not deserve to suffer especially if no other means of help is able.
They understood... does it make it any easier no, but at least a level of understand is what makes the difference..
Sorry to hear about all you others that lost bird last night, heart goes out to you...
Now saying this and catching the temp on our digital therm It was really cold in coop last night what can we do to our coop to keep it warmer... its 8X16 and we dont have it hooked up to electricity? For those that made their coops with electricity was it hard? or is it just as good to run extension cords with a heating light, I dont want to lose anymore if its pure human error, I would like to improve as much possible on the coop if need be?
